I think its just the idea of Ranma and co. needing to go to China to save
the Joketsuzoku village from destruction. I have to agree with what the
other responders have said, Don - it is very hard after all these years
of fanfics to find any idea (worth writing at least) that someone hasn't
done already in part or come close to. The trick is to just write your
story your own way - everyone can see when its different or when its
derived from someone else's fanfic. I have seen fanfics that were near
(90%) matches for each other, done by different writers without drawing
on each other's work - and who weren't flamed for it. People can tell.
In the case of Spreading Wings, the correlation between your and his
work is very low, really just that you're both drawing on R. Takahashi's
world. I would have said something in my mail if I thought you were
plagiarizing, Don, btw. So relax :) BTW Gary, I recommend taking a
look at Wings.. it promises to be a good series!
