  I know about the reference book - I bought it the week it was out...  Very nice...

  According to it, the Bore was opened by Mierin (Lanfear) and Beidomon.  What happens in tEotW is that Moiraine makes a generalization using the term "men".

  Or, another, more plausible, hypothesis is that people in the Third Age simply don't know or don't remember how the Dark One was initially released, so the modern Aes Sedai, being the feminists that they are, took the opportunity to put the blame on the men. (It *has* been over 3000 years - a lot can get lost over such a long period!)

  The latter assumption is likely the case, because if the knowledge of Mierin's actions was widespread among the Aes Sedai community, Moiraine would have probably violated the First Oath when she told Egwene that the men had done it.
