The bar was rather dark and depressing, but that was the way that
Marller preferred it. She sat at the bar, alone. No one approached
her, except the bartender, and that was only to refill her drink.
The mortals around her could sense the forbidding mood around her.

She was meeting someone. That someone was late.

A wry smile of amusement flickered on her face as she wondered how
her friend could possibly be late when that person had so much
influence over time.

The door to the place opened, and Marller knew that her friend had
arrived by the way every male in the place suddenly tensed up and
looked in the direction of the entrance.

She could feel the eyes of the mortals follow her friend as she
walked over to the bar, and she could feel the hope die in the men
when her friend sat down beside her.

The bartender came over and the new arrival murmured the name of a
drink to him. He nodded, grabbed a biiiig bottle of alcohol and
served it to her. The way he stuck around afterwards made it
obvious that he wanted to stay.

The glares that both Marller and her friend gave him told him to
reconsider his desire carefully.

Quickly, the bartender left and Marller was left alone with her
friend.

"So, why did you want to meet me?" Marller asked as she looked at
her friend.

The new arrival gave a shrug and tossed a handful of wavy white hair
over a shoulder. "No reason," she said. "For old times' sake, I
suppose."

Marller smirked. "Old time? With you around, we can visit the past
whenever we want."

The new arrival shrugged her shoulders.

The two women sat in silence for a moment. Finally, Marller spoke.
"You know," she said. "I was kinda surprised you called. I thought
you would be out partying with all the other gods and goddesses."
Marller's fangs showed briefly as she smiled. "Why did you call,
Urd?"

Urd looked at Marller out of the corner of her eyes. "What makes you
think I was partying with all the others?"

Marller shrugged. "Well, today WAS promotion day, wasn't it? You
know, the day of the decade when gods and goddesses get promoted up
a rank?"

Urd snorted. "Why do you think I got promoted?"

Marller raised an eyebrow, and looked down at her drink. "Well, I
assumed that... well, with all that work you and Skuld put in on
system maintenance... rumor was that you two were both shoe-ins for
promotion."

Urd smiled softly. "Yeah... Hey, do you remember that day, oh, five
years ago?"

Marller laughed. "How could I forget? That was when Keiichi and
Belldandy got married. I tried everything I could to mess it up...
nothing. I couldn't screw up anything."

"Skuld and I were working our butts off the past month, chasing down
every single bug and reprogramming and refining every single incident
which would give you the opportunity to crash the wedding. I
practically had to rework the entire time line around that date to
make sure nothing could go wrong."

Marller snorted. "The reprogramming worked so well, I couldn't even
get close enough to wish them a successful marriage. My superiors
finally realized that I could cause no more chaos to those two and
reassigned me. Thankfully."

"Not only that," Urd snickered. "The reprogramming worked so well
that Father assigned Skuld and I to system security. We had to come
up with a program to eliminate ALL systems and time line problems
due to demonic interference. Man, I was so busy, I didn't have time
to visit a bar for weeks!"

Marller shrugged. "Hey, like I said. I thought that with all that
work you and Skuld put in, you two were sure to get promoted."

Urd laughed and downed her drink. She refilled it. "Skuld got
promoted. Can you believe it? Both of my little sisters are first
class unlimited goddesses." Urd paused, looked at her drink, and
downed that one too. "I got looked over. Again."

Marller winced. "Ouch. I'm sorry."

Urd gave a sad laugh and shook her head. "You know what... every
single time promotion day comes around... I get so hopeful... I
should have realized that Father would never promote me. I'm such
a fool."

Marller was silent.

Urd went on. "I mean, I should have realized the first time. It was
the big promotion period. This was like, the most important
promotion we would get; our futures depended on it. If you did good
in classes, they assigned you to be the understudy of some of the
more powerful teachers, and if were doing poorly, you got one of the
less powerful ones. I was at the top of my class. I could out do all
the other students put together. Promotion period comes and what
happens? I didn't even get assigned to a first class instructor. I
got assigned to study under Hecate, second class goddess limited."

Urd spoke softly. "I can still remember the other godlings' taunts.
Half-breed... demi-demon... they said I would never be a first class
because I wasn't a full goddess."

"I remember that day," Marller said. "That was the first day we met
again, wasn't it? You got so upset you went to some bar, got
plastered, and ended on the wrong side of the heavenly gates!"

Urd snorted. "I seem to remember that you weren't exactly sober when
you smacked into me, either."

Marller snickered. "Yeah, well, we were both losers then and we both
needed friends."

Urd rolled her eyes. "Yeah, some loser you are, Marller, first class
demon unlimited."

"Hey," Marller cried, "You could be a first class demon unlimited
too, if you wanted to. Heck, you could have been the demon KING, if
you wanted to be."

Urd closed her mouth. "Yeah well..."

Marller was also silent for a moment. Then, she looked at Urd
seriously. "Why did you chose to go with Father when he and Mother
split up? You're a struggling second class, Urd. With Mother...
you could have been so much more."

Urd glared at Marller. "Hey. If you want to be the demon king so
much, why don't you?"

Marller snorted. "You know as well as I do that all the potential
went to you. You are the eldest and you can be king. I never will
be."

Urd was quiet for a moment. "I... I don't know why. I just don't.
It's like... it's like... well, why didn't you chose to be a goddess?
Why did you chose to be a demon instead?"

Marller shrugged. "I dunno... when Mother and Father asked me which
I wanted to be, I just said demon. It never even occurred to me to
chose goddess."

Urd smiled. "Exactly how I felt. It didn't feel right being a
demon... for some reason.. being a goddess... it's... it's just
more... right."

Marller smiled softly. "It's okay. I understand. But just remember...
if you ever feel unappreciated... hell really could use a demon
who knows system security inside out."

Urd smiled back. The two were silent for a moment. "This is nice,"
Urd said. "You know, what ever happened to the days when we used to
sing karaoke while piss drunk?"

Marller thought for a moment before she snapped her fingers. "I got
assigned to pester Belldandy and Keiichi. I couldn't exactly drink
with you when you were my direct enemy."

Urd nodded, understanding. She polished off the rest of her drink and
leapt to her feet. "Hey, let's go have some fun. You know, like the
good ol'days. Whaddaya say, Sister?"

Marller grinned. "Okay. Lead the way, Sis."

The two demi-demon-goddesses headed towards the exit. The bartender
was going to stop them, but then they both turned and stared at
him... and suddenly, the bartender decided that they had already paid
him.

Author's Notes:

I know that both Urd and Marller are very OOC in this fanfic, but
I just couldn't help myself when the idea knocked on my door and
introduced itself.
