Subject: [FFML] [spam] Why I Don't Read Fics

Hmmmmmm... strange.

Strange indeed that I am writing directly to the list, without prior
provocation, like leaving the country, which I already did, or
explaining my stand.

Hmmmm... didn't know I had a stand.

Now, I may sound like I'm talking from experience, but many of you
who came before me (pre-Exodus) know that I haven't had that many.

Now, the list is for fanfiction. Primarily, you send fics to be
commented on, and you comment on fics send in. Maybe you discuss
stuff that you've noticed, or make noises about what you want to
see. A lot of it is about writing, primarily about anime.

Now, I have been here a while, and while there are plenty of us in
the Zu, I'm one of the few that actually have all-the-time access
to the net. So, in the Zu, I'm one of the few who're really on the
list; most of the others post through this addy.

What's the point of this? Well, since they just post through here,
they have no reason to ask what fics have been out, unless they're
waiting for it.

I write "they" when I really mean "we".

I mean, how do we improve writing? We post it here, and expect C&C.
Truthfully, it also pays to read other fics, and comment on that, or
even to read list-posted commentary to find out stuff you might not
have noticed in your own work, or style. Mayhem did write, "C&C is
the currency of the FFML" but does anyone know from where?

It is not necessary to give C&C. It isn't even necessary to read
fics. If you write something, you post it.

Where is the fairness in that, hmm? What community existence would
you have if you stayed in a neighborhood, never attended any of the
subdivision meetings, and expected to do your part by putting up
notices on the community billboard?

Hmmmm... a little side-tracked there. What I did think about saying
is that people like me, who rarely read other fanfiction on the list,
are probably like me - that is, losing interest in writing.

Can that possibly happen? Yes. Is it an isolated case? I don't
think so.

There has been an influx of fanfiction in the list, and a slight
decrease in commentary. This in itself is a sign that there are more
people who are interested in hearing their own voice rather than
conversing.

What exactly am I saying then? I know that the lag in getting your
mail is significant, and you may feel that someone else has said it,
and that you don't want to be an "me too" poster, but take time to
respond to the fics you like. Take time to figure out what you like
about it, how you think it handles the anime(s)/manga(s)/series that
it writes about, and maybe, just maybe, you might find out something
about the way you write, and the way you feel about writing, and
they way everyone else feels about what you feel. Then respond to
the responses, if any. Then do it for the next segment. And again.

Hmmmmm... suddenly it sounds like a plea for C&C. Shrug.

If you can't muster the strength or the coherence the put it in a fic,
that is. No problem with that.

That's why I currently miss not writing shortfics. They get the point
across much faster, and they don't have to slant into something that

I've written before. Doesn't writing a series feel so tedious sometimes?

Hmmmmm... that's mostly it, then. So that you guys can have ideas about
what I'm likely to do next, I've watched the first 11 episodes of
Serial Experiments Lain, and I've read four Discworld novels. I've
sworn off of bridge for the remainder of the year (not millenium, that'd
be a year differential) and have had no success in finding a job to stay
me for the rest of the semester. I do have a chockful of RPGs to go
through, and I'm 1/3 through "Wild Arms". Yes, that's 1, not 2.

And I'm waiting for a fanfic that'll grab me by just reading the subject
header in my mailbox. I can't even do that to myself. Okay, maybe just
have a synopsis that'll grab at me. That'll work, too.

As for the rest of the Zu, Leper 17.1 is out, tWAtHaD Ch2/5 is waiting
for material, Rain Man is doing his novel, Radler is working on a secret
project, most everyone else is still studying and biding their respective
projects.

What a strange way to post a status update.

Switch (who still probably won't read the stuff)
