Think of it this way. The fic had someone acting drastically out of character
in order for the author to lecture the audience through the character.
Just because people feel strongly about the subject of the lecture doesn't
make the fic any better.
So maybe Kunou
heard somewhere that today in America was Veteran's day and decided to just
take the day to reflect. His father spent time in America, so perhaps he
heard it from him. One never knows.
Kunou's father hadn't been to America until he returned in the series, at
which point Kunou and him don't get along at all. There's little evidence
that he even lives in the Kunou mansion or sees Kunou anywhere except in
school, and his references to America are portrayed as, and seen by the
characters as, a sign of eccentricity.
