Prelude to Destiny
<Insert Standard Disclaimer>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Its been a long time... six years. Six years since I've been in Tokyo."
The cityscape whipped by rapidly outside of the train window, the
skyscrapers in the background moving at a more sedate pace than the nearby
buildings. The sun dipped below the horizon, setting the windows across the
city alight with a deep red light... almost like blood.
There had been too much blood recently. To much death...
Then why was he returning to Tokyo? This city that he fled so long ago with
his mother...
-Your... destiny...-
"Yes... my destiny. If I even knew what it was."
The train raced on, heading towards the heart of the city. The young man
stared out at the fading light, wondering what the darkness would bring.
Would it be some form of revelation, a sense of purpose or desire? Or would
it be the 'darkness'?
The young man retrieved his bag as the doors to the train slid open, and
waited for the press of people around him to dissipate. The cabin was a
wreck, with papers, bits of food, and trash thrown across the floor. None
of these things were familiar... all of his memories of Tokyo were of
clean, fresh things... flowers, trees, the shrine...
For the first time in six years, the young man stepped off of the train onto
the ground of Tokyo. The city of his destiny.
"Mother... I'm home."
...
The door crashed open with a loud bang, followed by the sound of bare feet
racing across the floor upstairs. There was a quick sliding sound, followed
by a crash and a rumbling sound as the person raced down the stairs.
"Big brother... BIG BROTHER!" a young woman called, desperately pulling on
her socks as she hopped across the tile floor of the kitchen. She managed
to pull one of them on before she reached the table, tossing her bag on the
surface. It slid across with a loud noise, nearly sliding off before the
tables occupant caught the strap.
"Thank you Onnichan." she replied, bowing slightly before pulling her other
sock on. "Sorry for keeping you here."
"Its no problem Alice." Timothy replied, moving her bag back onto the table
with a sigh and a smile. "We've still got a bit of time before we have to
get going."
Alice Monou smiled at her brother, before picking her bag up from the table.
Timothy smiled as he grabbed his bag from the floor and rose to his feet.
"Shall we get going then?"
"Are you two off to school?" A voice called from the hallway. The door to
the kitchen slid open as a tall man, his thick black hair shot through with
strands gray, walked into the room. His slightly hunched frame did little
to conceal the power in his movements... he had to body of a superb martial
artist.
"Yes father." Alice replied. "Bye!"
"Have a nice day dear. Timothy, stay out of trouble." was the reply as
both of the Monou children walked out of the house.
"I will Dad." was Timothy's faint reply.
...
"There go the Monou children, off to school as usual."
"I'm so glad that they grew up to be such wonderful children... Timothy is
such a kind soul, so willing to sacrifice himself for others... did you
know he dove into the river last week to save my child?"
"Yes, I'd heard about that. And he was the one who helped me after I came
back from the hospital... and Alice always brought me flowers from the
shrine everyday."
"Such bright wonderful children. Even after their mother died... the way
she did, they haven't really been affected by it."
"Yes, their father, the dear priest at the Tokagushi Shrine, has done such a
WONDERFUL job raising them... although Alice can be a little delicate at
times. Just like her dear, departed mother..."
"Such nice kids..."
...
Alice glanced over at Timothy, a slight smile crossing her face. "Big
brother, I had a very wonderful dream last night."
"A dream?" Timothy asked, a slightly amused expression crossing face. "And
what type of dream was it?"
Alice twirled around with a wistful sigh, still smiling. "It was a dream
about Kamui. I dreamt that Kamui was coming back to Tokyo."
"Kamui...?" Timothy asked quietly. "But Alice... Kamui has been..."
"Good morning Alice!" a young woman shouted from near the school gates,
jumping and waving one of her arms wildly.
"Good morning!" Alice replied, her smile still as radiant as ever.
"Good morning sempai!" the girl shouted, this time to Timothy. The reply
was a quick shrug and a halfhearted wave.
"Timothy... you need to be a little more cheerful in the morning." Alice
chided him, waving one of her fingers at him. "After all, you ARE one of
the most popular boys in school."
Alice giggled as a slight red tinge rose in Timothy's face. "Ah, big
brother... you're just to much sometimes. Listen, I know that you've got
one of your clubs this afternoon, and I can see myself home just fine. So
don't worry about me."
Alice watched as Timothy walked off, engulfed almost immediately by several
younger men, all of who started jabbering and gesturing wildly. Several of
Alice's friends walked up, surrounding her and making star eyes at Timothy.
"Wow... Monou sempai is just so COOL..."
"Hmmm... he doesnt speak much, even when so many people are talking to
him. That's whats so cool about him... he says little, but everything has
deep meaning."
"Yes... Alice said with a sigh, raking her raven black hair out of her
eyes. "Timothy always speaks from his heart, even though he doesnt say
that much. Just like most other animals."
"Err... Alice, why are you comparing your brother to an animal? Did you
have a fight with him or something?"
"No, Alice has always been an animal lover... so people say that she can
even speak with them." The last part of that comment came out in a voice so
low that Alice almost couldn't hear it. Almost.
"Well, as a fan of Monou sempai, I have to protest you calling your own
brother an animal, Alice." the first girl said, looking Alice straight in
the eyes.
"SHHH!" the other girl said, clamping her fingers down on the first girls
arm. "Alice is ver delicate... you wouldn't want to make her get so upset
that she got sick, would you?"
"Don't worry.. I'm not going to crack over a joke." Alice replied with a
teasing smile. "And besides, I'm in a very good mood today."
"Oh...? Why so Alice?"
"Because I had a wonderful dream last night... a dream I so wish would come
true..."
...
"Cut that OUT, you bastards."
The young man glanced around, watching the semicircle of men standing around
him. All of them looked like stereotypical government agents... black
suits, ties, shoes, and glasses. But these guys were different... they all
stank of magic. Powerful animating magic.
Wels. Creatures of magic, created by a powerful spell caster and dispatched
on a mission. The young man grimaced as he looked at the twelve of them
surrounding him. "Do you guys want to make be late for my first day at a
new school... whoever sent you has absolutely NO manners."
"Ka...mu...i... one of the Wels muttered, taking a slow, shuffling step
towards him. "You will... come with... us..."
"And my name isn't KAMUI!! I HATE that name! My name is Fei! FEI WONG!"
Fei clenched one of his fists, an aura of cracking energy surrounding it.
The entire alley was illuminated by the glow, setting the Wels's features
alight with an fey white glow.
"Ka..mu...i... Fei... Wong... You will... come with... us..."
The Wels took another step. And Fei smiled.
"Yeah. Right."
Authors Note:
Well, I'm back... with yet another story. I hope no one has done something
like this yet... ^^;;;
This is also kinda a half update as well... for anyone who was wondering
(or even cares) where I've been, I've been heavily engaged in other
projects. Graduation, college, that sort of thing. So I've been away from
the FFML.
The End is the Beginning is shelved at the moment... I really have no
inspiration for it, and no real clue as to how I want the story to progress.
New Gospel has... grown. If anyone is interested in seeing more of that
Xenogears fic, I'll post what I've written since I've left to this list.
Two more completed fics, and thats about it...
C&C is always appreciated... treasured, even. ^_^
Thanks!
