A buddy of mine describes this as the "Tolkein effect", having read a
parody of JRR's style that ran, in part:
"As the arrows whizzed around them, they dived behind a large boulder,
deadly missles missing their heads by mere inches. The boulder they had
leapt behind was smooth and weathered, of a stone not unlike that which
could be found in the quarries of their homeland...."
