Not bad...just one problem. Professor Oak explicitly calls Gary his
"grandson". He'd have to be in on this deception to do differently,
probably from before the series started.
Unless Professor Oak is the source of the situation. After all there's
no reason given in the story for why Gary is doing this. She can't
be doing for occupational access, since there are almost as many female
gym leaders as male. In fact I thought that was the greatest weakness
of the story. You have the twist, but it doesn't quite make sense
since her motivations remain unrevealed.
Hmmm, you're right, I was never really clear about that. What I was thinking
was that Gary/ina was a real tomboy when she was a kid and since Ash lived
next door to her (I'm mostly going by the Gameboy game continuity for this
aspect since according to the anime, Gary didn't even really know Ash until
he showed up late to nab his starter!), they became best friends. And as
time went on, she fell in love with him, but didn't want to reveal her real
sex because, well, she didn't want anything to change and she was too scared
of telling all. Also all her insults and stuff is just the way she deals
with being in love (you know, like The Ranma -> Akane thing but ten times
worse).
I didn't want to get too complicated and explain all this stuff, so I
thought I'd put in a few hints and let the reader's imagination take over.
As for the Professor Oak thing, well, he's obviously in it too ... maybe he
thought it was cute that Gary/ina was acting like a boy and let the
deception continue until Gary/ina asked him to keep it up for her. But
honestly, I didn't even want to put in the Prof, because the story doesn't
focus on him and I thought it was unimportant.
Seeya, and thanks for commenting. I may revise this to make it a bit
clearer. Or just continue it, like some people have asked and write a story
about Gary/ina getting Ash and explain it in a prologue or something. Soon
as I'm done with all my other commitments that is >_<

(Of course, the real bane of this story would be if Gary appeared bare
chested. But I can't really recall if he did, unless it was the Acopulca
(sp?) episode which was cut. But then I can just say he used a body suit
like James did over her binded chest ^_^;;)
