The sound of the late summer's warm breezes blew through the deserted
nighttime streets of Sunnydale, California. Few people felt any strong
desire to wander the streets late at night - a fact which was not
surprising, considering the mysterious deaths they read about in the
newspaper every few days. But tonight, at least, there was one group out
and about - three youths, two of them males and the other a red-headed
female, wandered away from the town cemetry, chatting among themselves.

"Wouldn't it be great if Buffy just showed up tomorrow?" Willow asked.
"Like nothing happened?"

"She can't just show up. She got kicked out." Xander reminded her, more
than a hint of bitterness in his voice.

"Yeah, I now. I just wish... I wish we knew where she was."

"Well, we all know she can take care of herself." Oz said in his usual
nonchalant manner. "I'd say she'll be back soon."

"I hope so." Willow agreed. "I still haven't gotten the hang of fighting
vampires by myself, and I kind of... well, we... we sort of don't... aren't
doing that well at it so far. And can we change the subject now?"

On a street neat the opposite side of the cemetry, a dark figure observed
another person out late at night. She was a girl of Asian descent aged in
her early teens, and dressed in a short, white kimono. An easy target, the
vampire thought. Snarling, it bared its fangs and charged at the girl.

Surprisingly, the girl did not scream and try to flee. She turned toward
her attacker, her golden eyes fixed on him, and stretched out her arm.
Flame shot from her hand, and her attacker could only let out a scream of
pain before it was reduced to ashes.

"Stupid thing." She said in a bored tone of voice. "It might become
tiresome if I have to fight those the whole time I'm here. I guess that's
another reason for me not to like Western Shinma."

"Do not forget, though, that this is not Japan. You are the foreigner
here." A masked and robed figure who had seemingly appeared from nowhere
said to her.

"I shall not forget that, Larva."

A young Japanese businesswoman bowed as she entered the office of Mayor
Richard Wilkins III.

"Good evening, Mister Wilkins. And my sincere thanks for granting us this
meeting. I had been informed that it was exceedingly difficult to find
time with you."

The mayor gave a broad smile, and relaxed in his chair.

"Konnichi wa, Yorume-san. Did I pronounce that correctly?"

	"Kanpeki desu." Yorume smiled.

"Arigato. Would you care for a peppermint?" The mayor opened the lid of
a box and offered it to Yorume.

"Thank you." Yorume took a peppermint, andlet it roll in the cup of her
hand. "I am aware of how important this year is, and I would like do
discuss an... investment which I believe we would both benefit from.

Cordelia Chase sat in Principal Snyder's office, fearing the worst. The
balding fascist had called her into his office for no stated reason, and
she hadn't so much as defended herself against an intrusion on her
territory yet. Okay, there was the incident with that girl who'd
accidentally touched her hair, but she'd only told her off. At least she
was going to find out now - although a large part of her dreaded that
knowledge.

"Miss Chase." Snyder said as he swivelled in his chair. "I'm sure you
are aware that senior-year students are sometimes required to assist a new
student in fitting in to the school."

"Yes, sir, I am." Oh, God, she thought. Please don't let this be what I
think it is.

"Good. Because there is a transfer student from Japan enrolled in
Sunnydale High this year, and I have noticed that you have more than enough
time for socialisation on top of schoolwork."

	Oh, no.

"Therefore," Snyder continued, "I am sure that you will have ample time to
make sure that young Miyu Yamano can adjust to the American school system,
and am giving you responsibility for her."

Cordelia tried to think of a word that describe how she felt about Snyder
at that moment. She failed.
