Incidentally, an idea that came to me...

One plot hole in the movie is that the computers are supposedly keeping
everyone in the Matrix because they generate power.  But, by ordinary
physics, this is impossible: you can't generate more energy than was in the
food that you fed the human to begin with.

Ugh. I have tried mightily to resist any foray into this thread but I need to say this before this thread is banned.
What you said above is correct, but if you look at the Matrix website, it's stated in the cannon that the AI also uses the "Dormant" regions of the human brain to increase its processing power. As my own aside, and using Agent Smith as my argument, when we tried to destroy the machines, who's to say the AI didn't want to take revenge?
