Chapter One

     Summer.

Summer is a special time of the year for children
everywhere. Summer means an end to school and the beginning
of adventure. Summer means lazy days spent fishing, or
examining the view found while sitting on a hill, or just
sleeping in. During the summer, every day is Saturday, and
Saturday never ends.

There was one child who had mixed feelings about summer.
Summer was when she had to go home. Kiki wanted to go home.
She hadn't seen her mother and father and all of her old
friends for the better part of a year. But Kiki was in
love, and leaving one's love is a difficult thing to do. Of
course, she could always take her love with her, except she
couldn't.

Kiki was in love with the City. She had many wondrous
adventures there. It was very difficult for Kiki at first.
At the age of thirteen, she had to go out on her own for a
whole year. "It's our custom", her mother said. "It was
very difficult", Kiki learned. She was never any good at
mixing potions and casting spells. She didn't even own a
wand. She had a very difficult time of it, but at least she
could fly, which was the one thing she did do well, or at
least well enough to deliver packages.

One day, after an autumn storm, Kiki took ill. After
she recovered, she could no longer fly, or even understand
the speech of her cat, Jiji. Fortunately, Kiki had good
friends. Her artist friend, who lived in the woods with the
crows, her dear old friend who sent along a herring and
pumpkin pie for Kiki's mother, and Mrs Osono the Baker Lady
and her quiet husband, the wonderful couple who gave Kiki a
place to live with a beautiful view of the sea. Then of
course there was Tombo. Thanks to Tombo, Kiki became
famous.

When the Pan-European Geographic Society's dirigible
expedition to Antarctica departed from the City, it did so
by taking the train. Unfortunately for the Society, the
magnificent dirigible, The Spirit of Freedom, lost control
in a bit of strong wind. The airship was destroyed.
Unfortunately for Tombo, he was nearly destroyed along with
it.

Luckily for Tombo, Kiki managed to save him in a
harrowing rescue with a borrowed pushbroom. This act of
daring earned Kiki at least twelve minutes of fame, perhaps
as much as fifteen. Kiki's televised rescue of Tombo was
even posted on the Internet, for a short time.

Kiki was so famous that a mail order company catering to
the more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts, campers, mountain
climbers, and the like, offered Kiki a job as their
spokeswoman, or perhaps spokeswitch. Kiki declined, because
her mother always taught her to reject such things, but she
did accept the rather ingenious luggage web harness they
made especially for her broom. Now, Kiki could fly with
nearly twice as many packages as before, and she never again
had to worry about loosing an important gift to the crows.
Jiji was silently relieved.

And the web harness was a good thing too. For tonight,
on the night of the full moon, Kiki was flying home, and she
was taking much more with her than what she brought to the
City. In fact, she took nearly everything, including Jiji's
special coffee cup, carefully wrapped in bubble-wrap, baked
goods for her mother, a special birthday gift from her dear
old friend, namely a pair of red shoes, and an even more
special birthday gift from Jiji, a kitten.

The one thing that Kiki simply had to leave behind,
because it was so big, was the large cast iron sign hanging
outside of her attic studio. Mrs. Osono promised Kiki that
she would keep it safe. She also promised Kiki that her
attic would always be open for the little witch who spent so
much of her time baby sitting.

All this was behind Kiki as she flew to the north
towards home. But her thoughts were not on home, or on the
City, or on her friends, or even on the nervous kiss on the
cheek given to her by Tombo. Rather, Kiki was brooding over
a letter she received just moments prior to her departure.
The letter was delivered by, of all things, an owl.

Harry Potter and the Magical Pushbroom

First Fic alert.

Yes, I really meant not to have any dialogue. There will be
more, later.

If anybody knows Kiki's last name, please tell me by private
email. I also need the names of the artist who lives in the
woods, and the old lady who baked the rather tasty looking
herring and pumpkin pie.

Here's the concept:

One day I saw a child reading a Harry Potter novel by
the Scottish author, J.K. Rowling. Within a year, Harry
Potter was everywhere, so when the first novel, "Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was released in paperback,
I picked it up. The novel was a remarkably good read for a
children's story. My mother had managed to buy the two
novels in hardback, so I borrowed them from her and read
them all within the week.

Who is Harry Potter? Ask your children or younger
siblings. Harry Potter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Potter, a
wizard and witch, who were brutally murdered by Lord
Voldemort, a rather bad man. Somehow, Harry managed to
survive the attack, even though he was a mere infant at the
time. He also managed to somehow defeat Lord Voldemort, to
the eternal gratitude of good magical folk everywhere.

Harry was put into the care of his aunt and uncle, two
very cruel people. Later, he was granted admission to
Hogwarts, an exclusive private school catering to magicians.
He learns to fly a broom and play a mean game of Quidditch.
If you want to know more, read the books.

Wheels spin in my brain. I had the notion that it would
be interesting to put an anime character into the Harry
Potter world. The question was which character would fit
in. After several moments of consideration, I came to the
realization that there was only one. Name an anime
character that lives in a pleasant and relatively innocent
world of magic and talking cats.

     Sailor Moon.

Then, I realized that was stupid, and I went with Kiki
instead.

Please do not expect more very soon. I am a 34-year-old
former naval officer, and at present I am a law student, legal
clerk, radio show producer, and a person who struggles at
creating at least the semblance of a social life.

Please feel free to provide commentary and criticism,
even if you intend to tell me that I am stupid, although I
already know that.

And now for teasers and ideas that may pop up:

The owls may resent Kiki for encroaching upon their
business.

     Kiki will play Quidditch.

She will display her amazing talent at potions in Prof.
Snape's class.

Will Jiji speak again? Phil Hartman is dead, so the
answer is regretfully no.

Harry Potter will not say "no" to herring and pumpkin
pie.

There is an inconsistency between Kiki's simple pushbroom
and the commercially manufactured magic brooms of Harry
Potter. Yes there is, isn't there?

Careful readers of Harry Potter know that Hogwarts
has a "one pet" rule.

     Lemon Warning. Just kidding.
