As a point of reference for those interested in writng apocalyptic tales
(not nessisarily EVA stories)
One of the best "sources" for Eva info is the "Red Cross Book" which is a
sort of glossary for the whole story.
YOu should be able to find it or a similair faq by looking at the Anime
and Manga web site or at the Anime Turmpike.

So is there supposedly going to be a succession of 17 [or so] each being
more powerful, that mankind has to defeat in a series of tests?
Well, a lot of the apocraphel (sp) revalations have to do with the
sacrifice of a red lamb or sheep in Jerusilam.
This could of course be an oblique reference to Christ...or not.
Through selective breeding this does exist.
one of the *triggers* for the Angels in Eva was genetic
tampering/experimentaion.
See also Dolly the Sheep :)
The Rev. of St.John has angels opening 7 seals (on a scroll) and each
time one is opened bigger nasties pop out.
(It may also refer to the last sould of the last person to be born.
...In this case Rei and her multi-person 1 soul nature may apply here.)
See the Demi Moore Mmove of the same name (as opposed to the Danish movie
with a chess-playing Death.)
where do the various names of the angels come from in eva? [all i remember
for canon* is the last one is named Tabris but i know the others have names]
The angels can be found in many dictionarys of Angels.
Interestingly enough Adam (who *does* show up first) is called "the first
Angel"
( Another nifty thing is looking up Eve cross-references you to
"see the Angel of Humanity" Which fits neatly for the Eva's
(co-incidence? Who knows)
All of the 17 (with 2 or 3 spelled more creatively) exist in the good
ones.
*canon: substituted in this phrase for "a fact" when citing a fictional
work.
are there or have there ever
been "dead sea scrolls" and what's really in them?
There was also a copper "scroll" which has yet to be fully translated (as
far as I know) which may or may not contain clues to the treasure of the
Temple.
The "Dead Sea Scrolls" were a series of parchments found sealed in clay
pots a few years ago
by the Dead Sea (hence the name). Basically, the Dead Sea Scrolls are like
a rough version of the bible, pre C&C. As of now, people still don't
know what's written on all of them, but
scientists are still piecing together the scraps, so someday we might
know.
picture Marvel "what if" stories here....
as many bits of biblical lore in the scrolls have been "edited" out of
current works due to confradiction or for clarity.
of characters who would supposedly exist as of this point in time 1999
correspond to people? [i.e. Gendo, Misato, Ritsuko, more importantly the
surnames Ikari, Rokubungi [gendo's "maiden" name], Katsuragi, Akagi] and if
so could those people be the same people that will/have be[en] in
evangelion?
The characters are mainly named after old ships and ship classes from
world war 2.
off-topic: anyone else notice that shinji has a big oedipus complex going?
he seems to be at least semi-in love with rei, who is a clone of his mother,
his relationship to unit-01 (who knows how that really works, and unit1 has
his mothers soul in it) , and he clearly hates his father [but then, so does
everyone else]
Dysfuntional relationships focusing on families is what NGE is about.
We all become our parents.
- well unless that means sleeping with Gendo which I won't do!
