It would be a little silly to say "You can write a Final Fantasy 5 fic, but
not a Final Fantasy 7 fic, because only FF5 has had anime made for it". If
you ever intend to enforce the anime/manga only rule, I think that Japanese
video games should be added to the list of allowable subjects (and
sentai/live action, while you're at it).
It would be equally silly to call it the
'Anime/Manga/Video-Game/Sentai/Live-Action/Anything-Japanese Fanfic
Mailing List.'
I've usually simply thought of it as an anime mailing list. Just use your
common sense.
