NABIKIS MOVE
by Morgan Hudson (dataraven_659@hotmail.com)
OBLIGATORY DISCLAIMER : As if you didn't know, Ranma 1/2 is the creation of Rumiko Takahashi.
It is currently owned by Viz Video and Viz Comics, as well as Kitty Video in Japan. All of
the characters here are copyrighted, trademarked, and completely NOT MINE. I am protected only
by the fact that Takahashi-sama is FAR too nice a person to sue me.^_^
"NEVER Ranma Saotome!" Tatewaki Kuno lifted his bokken yet again, staggering back
as his opponent unleashed a hail of lightning fast blows, some of which even connected.
"The Blue Thunder of Furinkan shall NEVER admit defeat!"
Leaning back against the chain link fence, Akane Tendo sighed and glanced at the
school clock. At this rate, they were going to be late for class... again. If Kuno werent
better at fighting his father then he was at fighting Ranma, the crazy old principal would
have had all their hair by now.
SPLASH!
"Heh! Youre all wet, Kuno!"
Akane blinked. For once, someone other than Ranma had gotten doused. That almost
seemed... wrong, somehow.
"You will address me... as SEMPAI!" Kuno bellowed, and the fight continued.
Someone sighed behind her. "Boys will be boys, eh, Akane?"
Akane nearly jumped out of her shoes. "NABIKI! You shouldnt sneak up on people
like that!"
Her older sister smirked mischievously. "Well excuse ME for thinking I wouldnt
be able to sneak up on a master martial artist like my baby sister!" With a look of
calculated disdain, Nabiki watched as Kuno and Ranma battled back and forth. "So Akane,"
she said, never taking her eyes off the swordsman, "do you want me to take care of Kuno
for you?"
"What do you mean, Nabiki?"
Nabiki shrugged. "Im just saying I think I know a way to cure Kuno of this
stupid obsession he has for you."
Akane was skeptical. "How much?"
"Two yen," Nabiki said, and smiled secretively.
"TWO YEN? Only TWO? Why?"
Again the secretive smile. "Im feeling generous today. And we cant very well have
word getting around that Nabiki Tendo works for free, now can we?"
Akane paid up. She HAD to know what this "cure" of Nabikis was, even if there was
no way it could ever work.
**********
The note had been waiting for him in his shoe locker. Careful not to draw attention
to himself as the teacher droned on, Tatewaki unfolded it and read the words once again.
TO TATEWAKI KUNO, ALSO CALLED BLUE THUNDER :
PLEASE COME TO THE SECOND FIELD OF FURINKAN HIGH SCHOOL AT 5:36 PM
FOR A CONFRONTATION.
There was no signature, and he couldnt identify the handwriting. Well, if this
mysterious challenger thought Tatewaki Kuno one to turn down a duel, they thought wrongly,
indeed!
**********
The second field of Furinkan High School was the most desolate and isolated place in
all of Nerima. A fitting place, thought Kuno, for a duel. The mottled light of the setting
sun cast eerie shadows over the freshly cut grass, and cast a rosy glow over everything. He
had to give his mysterious challenger credit : the man had admirable aesthetic taste.
"Tatewaki Kuno."
He turned to face his opponent. "Nabiki Tendo?"
Indeed, it was she, fists clenched at her sides and jaw set fiercely. Her school
dress fluttered silently in the breeze as she matched his steely gaze with one of her own.
Tatewaki Kuno chuckled and put away his bokken. "Truly, Nabiki Tendo, thou art
sure no craven to face one such as the Blue Thunder. However, I shall not battle an
unarmed and defenseless maiden such as thyself."
"I never said I was going to fight you, Kuno. Just confront you."
"Confront... ME?" Despite himself, Kuno stepped backwards. Sensing his weakness,
Nabiki began to advance, which forced him back even further.
"Thats right, Kuno. Im sick and tired of you and your fighting, and your speeches,
and Im ESPECIALLY sick of you hounding Akane." Kuno bumped into something, and realized he
had backed into a lone cherry tree. Undaunted, Nabiki continued her advance. "You and all
your Shakespeare, and poetry, and declarations of love. You know what I think, Kuno? I think
youre full of hot air."
"What did you say?" She was standing VERY close to him now, glaring fiercely up at
him with her deep brown eyes. His pulse was racing, and he felt as if he had been doused with
ice water. Why was he so afraid? Nabiki Tendo couldnt hurt him... could she?
"I think youre full of it, Kuno-chan. I think you dont even know what love is. I
think the only reason you chase after girls is because youve never had one." Nabiki paused
for a moment, her breath coming in gasps as if she suddenly couldnt get enough air. Here
it was : the point of no return. "And I think," she added shakily, "you need to be kissed
very badly."
Kuno opened his mouth to say something, and she quickly pressed hers against it. It
was hard to say who was the more surprised : Kunos eyes bulged almost as wide as Nabikis.
After a few seconds, Nabiki realized she had made a grave error. In stretching up on tiptoe to
reach Kunos lips she had left herself badly off-balance. Yes, she told herself, that was why
she was pressing against him like that : balance.
Kuno hasnt blinked in nearly a minute. Clearly, he told himself, Nabiki Tendo had
somehow slipped on the wet grass, and fallen. He had best support her, he thought, as his arms
slipped around her waist, lest she fall further and injure herself. Yes, that was it : support.
A few more seconds later, Nabiki Tendo must have regained her balance, as their lips
parted.
"Well," said Nabiki in her usual businesslike tone, "it seems I owe Akane her money
back. That obviously had no effect at all."
"Indeed," Kuno responded calmly, "none whatsoever."
**********
Nabiki went straight home and locked herself in her room. Knees shaking, she sat in the
corner and closed her eyes, trying not to think about piercing blue eyes, chiseled features, and
surprisingly soft lips. She tried not to think of the warmth of his breath on her, the firm and
yet gentle grip of his hands on the small of her back. She DEFINITELY tried not to imagine those
hands moving elsewhere... but she had little success.
"Sure," she groaned to nobody in particular, "no effect at all."
**********
Across town, Tatewaki Kuno lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He had tried to
focus in his precious pictures of the delicate Akane and the robust pig-tailed girl, but his
mind kept wandering to other things : the taste of cherry lip gloss, the faint scent of lilacs
that still clung elusively to him, and the soft, warm body that had pressed against him so
delicately.
Tatewaki Kuno lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling, and imagined he was still
in the field, kissing her.
"Of a certainty," he muttered, "none whatsoever."
