most web browsers cannot actually handle anything that is not either plain
text or HTML. Word 97 is neither.

Actually, I suspect a great many people don't even have Word 97. I know I
don't.

At the end of the day, it's your call. How many potential readers are you
happy to exclude because you can't be bothered to present your stories in a
readable format? After sweating blood writing them, surely a little extra
effort is worth it?

I am told that Word 97 even has a built-in export to HTML utility, making
the necessary conversion a no-brainer.
