To quote the FFML FAQ:

Word97 format is a non-text attachment, so you can't post attachments in
that format, and you've just wasted your time.  

Yet another reason why reading the FAQ is good for you.

PS: Since they are going to be posted as attachments, the fics will
also be in Word 97 format. There's not much I can do, as that is the
way they are posted to my homepage. 

You post them on your homepage in Word '97 format?  That's bad netiquette.
I'd suggest simply converting the files to ASCII (for here) and HTML (For
your page).
