Taro drinking the drowned octopus water is not in the manga.

The manga also doesn't say that he only splashed part of his body.  That's a
fan explanation, and one that mostly works (except for the part where he shot
ink out of his non-octopus fingers), but it _is_ an attempt to rationalize the
inconsistency by assuming something that's not actually said.
