As I understand the custom, the family name of the married couple is the
family name of the person whose family has the higher social caste. In
modern days, this is modified by what each couple brings to the
marriage.

Not quite the whole Story, Jack.  Depends on OTHER factors as well.
The Factors that control what name is taken are the following...
One. Family Rank (Unclear who's the higher Standing... Tendo or Satome... my
gut says Tendo, but never know... Satome may have been a very high rank clan
that fell on hard times.  Note, they DO have a Family Katana, which at the
least means that they WERE Samurai{there are no more Samurai Outlawed by the
Emp}. But, so were the Tendos.  I played with the idea that the Satomes were
of a higher rank who just fell on hard times, money wise {Would explain why
Nodoka treasues the katana so much})
Two. Dowry/What was brought to the Marriage.
    It's Likey that Ranma WILL get the Satome home when marrying. (Only
child, so Nodoka HAS to offload it to him, to adiovd that 70% tax.)
    Though Akane will bring the Dojo/House with her, soo... you could say
she brings more.
    Also we DON'T know how rich Nodoka is, but figure this... she's
maintained a house IN Tokyo, on her own... even if she worked (Unlikey,
considering her.) she would NOT have brought eng. cash in to manitain it.
So she is prob. well off. And as stated before, most assests are transferred
to the FIRST married child, to get around that tax.

If Nodoka's family had the higher social caste, or Nodoka had brought a
huge dowry to the marriage while Genma brought little or nothing
(knowing Genma, most likely both), then it would be possible that
Saotome is Nodoka's family.

Unclear... I DO argee that Nodoka would have brought a huge dowry into the
marriage (I recall, vaugley, that Genma had two girlfreinds and chose Nodoka
because she was richer, I THINK, been a LONG while since I even checked on
that.)
But, Genma KNEW where the Family graves were, and he's NEVER struck me as
someone who would be concerend with that, UNLESS he was by birth a Sataome,
while Nodoka WOULD be, even if only by adoption/marriage.

Should Akane and Ranma marry, then in all liklihood their family name
would be Tendo, because Akane would have the dojo as a dowry while Ranma
would have nothing.

See Above.  Also, Ranma is a ONLY child, and MUST carry on the Sataome line,
while Akane has two sisters to carry on the name.
While, I argee that it should be Tendo (based on what we see...) take into
factor, that Ranma is a only child AND that Ranma does have a dowry of his
own to bring in... (Humm, Humm... marry them, Nodoka moves in and they rent
out the other house... humm...) And it gets a lot more unclear (Plus it
depends on what the engagement argeement said.  Could be that Tendo was the
family name chosen...  I really don't see Ranma caring all that much.)

A Ranma/Ukyo pairing, in all liklihood, would be Saotome because of the
huge 'classical' social difference (Samurai lineage and cook), despite
the dowry.

Like I said before, RANMA DOES have a dowry (Why does everyone overlook the
Satome house? *Shrugs* Plus we DON'T know if Ukyo OWNS the property that
Ucchan's is on, She could lease {and likey too.})
Argeed though.  Unlikey that Ranma would take Ukyo's family name.

Other Notes
Why does everyone overlook the following points?
One.    Genma as FAMILY head and Head of School made the Marriage argeement
with the Tendo head, NOT Genma as Father. while the two to others were made
as Father (Clan head always beats father in that...) So the "engagment" that
Ranma is bound to FIRST is the Tendo (and there is three Tendo's.)
Two.Ukyo disaoved the engagment, WHEN she attacked Genma (she stated that
she wasn't there to marry Ranma, but get revenge. She had her chance, and
failed.) plus the yatti (if you assume that the Gambler King was for
real...) wasn't HER dowry, but the Gambler Kings anyways... PLUS Ranma DID
have a Omai and turned her down.  No Engagement to Ukyo, by social custom.
(Sorry CoU fans.)
Three... (Gregg Sharp is excused from this, if what I heard is right.)
    Akane's level of pounding Ranma goes DOWN in the Manga, after a volume
(would have to pull the volumes and count... so I am not sure when the
slowdown takes place.) PLUS Ranma DID mouth off before the wedding, and
Akane didn't smack the boy around... (Like I said, Gregg's excused from
this, along with anyone who hasn't read the whole manga series.)
Four.    People who have Ryouga chasing Akane after Vol 36, are forgetting
two little things... One, at the Wedding Ryouga was pissed at the lost
water, NOT at Ranma marrying Akane, and two Akari... Ryouga's given up on
Akane by this point.
Sorry, just had to rant...

am a Knight of a Tendo Finacee, yes...)
