Way of the Shinji

***

The story of an alien light years from home and the boy he
befriended. Nope, this isn't E.T.

***

Spying Shinji in the flesh for the first time, Misato pulled up to the
curb. "Sorry, am I real--?"

She stopped when she saw the man sitting next to him. He
appeared to be in his early thirties, though he had the sort of face
that it was hard to tell, dressed in long brown robes. There was an
air of peacefulness about him, much like a Hari Krishna, though he
didn't have the shaved head.

"And you are?" Misato asked, temporarily forgetting about the
rampaging Angel.

"I am Shinji's guardian. My name is Obi-wan," the spoke with a
soft voice and a short bow.

"Right," Misato said, thinking that this guy was obviously a
member of some foreign religious cult. "Look, we don't have time
for all this. Everyone in the car, now!"

Misato was only a little irritated that they both took their time in
getting in, as if they were going out for a picnic rather than about
to get stomped on by the Angel. She was more irritated when,
after getting their first glimpse of the rampaging monster, their
only reaction was Shinji saying, "So that is the disturbance in the
Force that we sensed."

Obi-wan had only nodded.

***

"Here Shinji, read this," Misato told the boy, handing him the Nerv
information packet. She wondered if it was such a hot shot idea to
let his guardian in on this, but for some reason it had seemed like a
really good plan to take him with them at the time.

"Nerv, my father's agency. He must have called me here in order
to work for him."

"Yeah, well I don't suppose you're looking forward to meeting him
again after all these years. Probably hate his guts, right?"

Shinji turned to Misato, a surprised look on his face. "Hate leads
to anger, and anger leads to the Dark Side. I have learned to let go
of such negative emotions."

*Creepy,* Misato thought. *They really must be members of
some cult. Wonderful. Well, here comes the Geo-Front, this ought
to impress them.*

This time the only comment came from Obi-wan, who said to
Shinji, "Remember how I was telling you about Alderan?"

The boy nodded.

"It was like this, only much bigger."

Misato only groaned and hit her head on the steering wheel. She
no longer wanted to know what the heck they were talking about.

***

"I believe we should head in this direction, miss Katsuragi," Obi-
wan finally spoke up after they had been wandering for some
minutes.

"Hey, what makes you think that's the right way? I'm the one with
the map here and I haven't even told you where we're going yet."

"Because the Force is strongest in that direction."

Shinji nodded. He had felt it too, but thought it impolite to say
anything. He was still learning when to speak and when to remain
silent.

"What is this 'Force' thing you keep going on about?"

"It is the energy that binds all living things in cosmic harmony."

Misato shook her head, more religious nonsense, just like she had
expected.

***

"Who is this you've brought with you, captain?" Ritsuko said with
anger. "Do you know what kind of a security risk you've caused?"

"It's all right for me to be here, I am Shinji's guardian," Obi-wan
told her.

"Oh, it's all right for him to be here," Ritsuko said. "He's Shinji's
guardian."

Misato looked stunned by Ritsuko's change of heart, but said
nothing.

"Let's move along."

"Come on everyone, let's move along!"

***

As soon as Shinji came face to face with Unit-01's face, he began
to recite under his breath, "Fear is the mind killer, the little . . .
wait, wrong movie."

***

Everyone was shocked when the beam that was suddenly about to
squash Shinji flat, suddenly defied all the laws of physics by
moving over to the left to fall harmlessly in the tank that
surrounded Unit-01. Everyone was so keen on this spectacle that
no one saw Obi-wan's gesture to the falling beam.

***

Shinji struggled to stand when he head his master's voice in his
head. "Let go, Shinji. Let the Force flow in and out of you.
Become one with it's spirit."

Shinji closed his eyes and did as his master had instructed. Unit-
01's struggles ceased.

The Angel picked Unit-01 up by the face and began to use an
energy beam to stab it in the eye. Despite this, Shinji felt no pain.

"The left arm, it's regenerating itself!" one tech said, half surprise
and half alarm.

"Amazing!" Ritsuko added as she watched the newly-regenerated
arm suddenly strike the Angel's core dead center with such a blow
that the fist emerged out the other side of the Angel.

***

Shinji found Obi-wan by his bedside when he awoke in the
hospital.

"Impressive work, my young paduwan learner," the Jedi master
told his pupil. "But you will have to learn even greater control if
you are to truly master this Unit-01 and defeat these Angels."

"Yes, my master."

Just then, Misato entered the hospital room. "Hey guys, I got you
the apartment right next to mine. Isn't it great?"

Shinji and Obi-wan exchanged a look that could be summarized as
'the path of the Jedi is fraught with peril.'

***

Shinji and Obi-wan meet Pen-Pen and sample some of Misato's
'food.' Not to mention beer.

Shinji and Obi-wan find a nice quiet place to have a lightsaber
duel.

I could go further with this, but have way too many other stories to
work on at the moment. Besides, I've only seen Episode I once and
don't remember enough to finish this.
