    C. Genma Saotome
        Genma is easily one of the most mis-interpreted characters in
the whole Ranma series. The only things that can be said about him would
be that he's a good martial artist (he trained RANMA for crying out
loud!), he's a glutton, and a coward. He does have a sense of Honor (no
matter how warped you think it might be) and he does care about his
son's wellbeing (but this could also be said to just be him saving his
own neck from Nodoka...hmmm...). Not much is said about the infamous
training trip in the Manga other than meeting Ukyo, The neko-ken (which
was done when Ranma was 10 by the way), Ryoga, Jusenkyo, and meeting the
amazons. The actual length of the trip is variable since its not stated
in the manga, but it could be anywhere between 10 to 13 years (since the
only condition would be that Ranma was old enough to put a handpainting
on the seppuku document, which is pretty dang young). The whole
situation with Kaoru, the 'rice and 2 pickles fiancee' isn't mentioned
in the manga, but an anime only character, but the time the arrangement
took place would have to be before Ranma could crawl, so either Genma
took small training trips before he left on the long one, or he and
Ranma have actually been on the road all of Ranma's life. overall, Genma
is an idiot, a petty thief, and a coward with some sense of honor.

Where do you get the idea that he has any honor from?
I am honestly wondering.
He lies to his wife. Makes Ranma lie to his mother.

Okay, that is done to save his own skin. I'm sure if you had your life
on the
line, and were a complete coward, lying to your wife is a small price
for your
life.

Stole a okinamiyaki cart/dowry when he had already
arraigned for a fiance.

He did technically go through with the engagement so I guess he felt
justified
with taking the dowry. He has a warped sense of honor (really warped),
but its
there somewhere.

Do you think he bought the cats
that he used for the Neko-ken?

He could have just gotten alley cats or just borrowed them. Gosunkugi
got just
as many cats in the first appearance of the neko-ken by the way. This is
Ranma
mind you, some things don't HAVE an explanation. ^_^

Constant hypocrisy about
'Being a true martial artist' and then tries to throw
Ranma to Happosai on Happy's arrival... and countless
other examples.

the whole hypocrisy issue does say that Genma is aware of honor, he just
might
not always choose to follow it is all ^_^. The whole Happy thing was
done to
save his own skin, he IS a coward.

No... I do NOT like Genma. I will admit that. But, I
really think you need to re-look at the Manga for Genma.

I think you should too. Genma IS a thief, he IS a coward, he IS a
glutton, but
he also has some sense of honor, whether he chooses to follow it or not.
He
does try to help Ranma out on some occasions (like bringing him to the
moxibustion valley during the 'hiryu shoten ha' arc and the save during
the
first fight with kuno. He also got a part time job in the beginning),
but when
the situation gets to tough, he crumbles like a house of cards ^_^.
