Well, in episode 11 of Slayers (where we first met Phil) Lina
made comments such as 'what the hell' and 'how's he's able to do that'.

That would indicate that Phil-san doesn't use magic. Of course it is
possible,
but my opinion is that he's not using magic to enchance his abilities. It's
just a 'justice filled hearth.' ^_^

As a Warrior of Justice, Phil has exhibited prodigious leaping and balance
abilities, exceptional HTH combat skills, and truly ridiculous strength.
In short, he's a high-level barbarian, and he looks the part.

What the author could do to maintain Lina's astonishment in this story is
to contrast the relatively puny-framed Akane and Ranma performing the same
feats of great physical strength and prowess. Also, factor in Ranma's
speed, agility, and grappling and wall-climbing ability, which seem
superhuman. From what we've seen so far in the English release, only
Xellos moves at Ranma's speed, so Lina should draw the obvious conclusion
that the two are the same type of being. Not to mention Ranma's smugness,
which should also remind her of the mysterious priest. I'll leave it at
that to avoid spoilers, hopefully.

I loved the comparison, personally. Other than denseness (which is
actually debateable with Kasumi), Gourry does have an "innate good
cheer", IMO, and if so, he certainly has it in common with Kasumi.

Well, maybe I just remember the times he's a gallant swordman or a dumb
sidekick better than when he's a cheerful person who makes everybody feel
welcome... ^_-

They both have that air of innocence, blissful ignorance, and utter
gullibility about them. Remember how hard it is sometimes for Gourry to
figure out who the bad guys are?
