Of course it's hard to imagine Ami and Akane being twins without Akane

 is a planet of extreme temperatures and Mercury's Senshi powers are water-based.
 Conceivably the Twin Mercuries might have hot- and cold- water based abilities.

Add that to a few Jusenkyo curses and watch the chaos.

And why should Ami's being absent at Ranma's arrival get her out of the engagement?
 Wouldn't Nabiki and Kasumi be just as likely to dump Ranma off on Ami as Akane.
 Unless Akane is protective of her 'weaker' twin?
