This is my second post of this. The first time I got some kind of
message back from listar saying I may gave given a command and if I want
to give a command to mail to listar instead. So I waited a bit, it
never showed up, so I'm going to try it again. Sorry if it turns out to
be a double post.
This is going to be a kind of Ranma/Macross fusion using the Macross
universe and little else. No Macross characters show up. I just didn't
wanna mess around with super martial arts, I like mecha better. At the
time I wrote most of this I hadn't planned on it being Macross, so most
of my plans just went right out the door. I still don't know squat
about Macross Plus, having only seen a little of it, so I need some
help/suggestions. I did have this planned out fairly thoroughly, but I
discovered a hole in the premise and had to redo the idea. This is a
VERY ROUGH DRAFT, I am still very open to large scale suggestions.
Those of you who have read my NGE/Ranma idea, Gendo Kuno, may think that
I'm just playing with ideas I'll never finish. This was originally
written long before the NGE idea and I'm just posting it to combat a
case of writer's block on my main series. I want to develop it into a
small series, something I can work on when I'm blocked on my other two.
More the merrier.
Introduction rough draft.
A sad birth, a Happi solution.
Not.
A young man paced nervously in a hospital waiting room. He was fairly
tall, heavily built, well defined muscle, and had short black hair
sticking out from underneath a white bandanna. He walked quickly across
the waiting room, turned, then walked quickly back. He absentmindedly
chewed on the plastic back of one of the chairs that he had torn apart
without noticing. Suddenly he stopped and started walking to the
window.
The head nurse looked up. "NO Mr. Saotome. We don't have any news for
you yet."
Genma paused midstride, turned and resumed his pacing. He was worried,
it was his first child.
Fathers were usually allowed into the room to witness the birth, but
there had been complications and Nodoka had to be moved to surgery. The
nurse had looked at him, sniffed, and informed him that it was a clean
room environment, he'd have to wait in the lobby. That was when he'd
ripped the back off the chair.
Several of the people waiting in there with him smiled as they watched
him. They recognized the signs of a first time father.
Finally, a young male nurse walked out the door and stopped him. "Mr.
Saotome?"
Genma stopped chewing on the seat and crushed it within his hands. "Y
yes?" he stammered.
The nurse didn't smile. "Come with me Mr. Saotome. Your wife wants to
see you." He turned and walked back through the door.
Genma rotated his hands and plastic shards rained down as he followed.
The orderly soon led Genma to an important looking doctor standing
outside a room. The doctor looked up.
"Hello Mr. Saotome. I'm glad to meet you. I'm Dr. Yamato."
"Uh, hi. Is Nodoka...?"
"Yes, Nodoka. Come, I'll tell you both together. She has just given
birth." The doctor turned and led Genma into the room.
A young woman lay on the bed, looking much the worse for wear. Her
hair was soaked in sweat and she looked exhausted, but she fought to
remain consciousness. A heart monitor beeped softly in the background.
Genma was instantly by her side. "Nodoka-chan, how are you feeling?" he
asked, concerned.
*beep* *beep* *beep*
"I've felt better, can I see my baby?"
*beep* *beep* *beep*
Dr. Yamato stepped up. "I have good news, and bad news, and more good
news. Which do you want first?"
*beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*
Genma looked up with terror in his eyes. "What's the bad news?" He
gripped Nodoka's hand tighter.
*beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*
"I'm afraid there were complications, and the surgery did not go well.
Nodoka..., you will not be able to have any more children."
*beeeeeeeep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*
His expression lightened. "But, the good news is, you have one healthy
child already."
*beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*
Genma and Nodoka sighed in relief. A young nurse wheeled a small
carriage in and picked up a cloth wrapped bundle.
"Here you go, a healthy, happy, baby girl."
*beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*
Nodoka stopped breathing and Genma fell over in shock. The doctor and
the nurses ran forward to try to revive her. They soon wheeled her back
out. The doctor stayed to attend to Genma.
Genma awoke, clutching at the doctor's jacket.
"Easy! Easy! It's okay, you wife will be fine. Just relax,
relaaaxx," Dr. Yamato said soothingly.
Genma sobbed in relief. "She's gonna be okay, she's gonna be okay,
erk! She's gonna be okay?! And we have a girl? Oh, crap."
The doctor looked at him in horror. "You don't want your wife to
live?"
Genma waved at him distractedly. "Of course I want her to live! I
love her! But with only one child, a girl..., I've failed." Genma
nearly broke down again.
The doctor looked puzzled. "What's wrong?"
Genma sniffed slightly. "We need a male heir so our family line will
continue," he whined.
Realization came to the doctor. "Ah, I see. A very old family. Well
don't cry about it. You could always adopt..., or, if that doesn't
appeal, modern science can create a new baby from your sperm and a donor
egg and have someone else carry it to birth."
Genma looked up. "Create an heir? From both of us?"
The doctor shook his head sadly. "I'm sorry, we cannot get the
required egg from your wife. Her injuries...," the doctor trailed off.
Genma smashed his head against the floor as the doctor tried to
restrain him. An idea was jarred loose in his head. He sat up
suddenly, throwing the doctor back.
"The Master! He will know what to do!" He turned to the doctor.
"Quickly! How long until my wife wakes up again?"
The doctor shook his head groggily. "Oh, it depends. Could be up to a
day."
Genma turned and grabbed him by the shoulders. "If she wakes up before
I get back, do not let her see the baby, and do not talk about it's
gender in her presence!" He shook the doctor. "Understand?!"
The doctor held up his hands placatingly. "Okay! Okay!"
Genma dropped him and ran full speed out the door.
****************
A shriveled old pervert glared with contempt at the worthless student
as he groveled before him.
"Get up boy! Show some spine! Now, am I to understand that your wife
has just had a child, a girl, and will be unable to have any more?"
Genma nodded, and glanced around nervously at the interior of the
Happi-days lingerie emporium. Lacy bras and panties were everywhere,
and one entire wall was devoted to teddies so delicate they were encased
in glass to prevent damage.
Happosi continued. "And because this is a girl, she will not be fit to
be an heir of you and your wife, right?"
Another nod.
"And you wife is going to be extremely upset, right?"
Genma gulped and nodded again.
"And you came running here, hoping that I would just wave my hand and
fix it all, right?"
Sheepish nod.
"Okay."
Genma facefaulted. "Okay?"
Happosi nodded. "But not without a price. What, do you think I could
just pour some magic water on your daughter and turn her into a man?
This is going to be hard to do." His eyes turned cold. "You're lucky I
have chosen your child to be the true heir of Anything Goes Aerial
Combat and need you to have a son. I want more pretty young girls in
this world, not less."
Genma backed up nervously.
"My price for arranging this is that I may have free reign with the
child at my discretion."
Genma looked worried, but didn't stay anything.
Happosi looked at him. "Come on, we both know you came to me because
time is short. I don't want anything to do with it until it's older
anyway."
Genma reluctantly nodded.
****************
Three men stood in a private room in the hospital where Nodoka had
given birth. Acting quickly on some debts owed him, Happosi had
arranged for Nodoka to be kept unconscious until everything was
straightened out.
"Genma, meet Mr. Kuonji. Mr. Kuonji, meet Genma Saotome," Happosi
intoned. Kuonji was a weird one, but valuable, so it never hurt to be
polite. Not many people were master geneticists and surgeons, and fewer
still were active reasearchers in the medical feilds.
"Honored, Mr. Kuonji."
"Can it. I understand you have a job for me?" he snapped irritably.
Genma appeared taken aback. "Well, my wife has just had a child, a
baby girl, and she can't have any more children now."
Happosi handed Kuonji a medical clipboard showing Nodoka's condition.
He flipped through it briefly.
"Nope. I can't fix it. She's too old, maybe in a few decades I would
have the technology, but as it is, you're screwed." Kuonji handed the
clipboard back.
Genma's eyes watered. Happosi sighed and interrupted.
"No, I'm not hiring you to cure his wife, I'm hiring you to change his
daughter. You are the only one to have such success with the
procedures."
Kuonji allowed himself a moment of pride. "Well, yes. I am the best.
But I haven't done humans yet, just lab animals."
Happosi waved at him. "Not important. Can you do it?"
Kuonji looked thoughtful. "Tricky." He paused. "Yes, I can do it,"
he said after a moment, "she isn't to old yet."
Genma looked worried. "Will he be..., functional?"
Kuonji looked at him sideways. "Will he be able to have children you
mean?" Seeing Genma's nod, he continued. "I have created a technique,
one that will completely convert your daughter to a perfectly normal
boy, with all, all now, the right parts. He will need checkups more
often than most children, but it shouldn't be a problem."
Genma raised his hands to the sky. "Great!"
Kuonji interrupted him. "But there's a price."
Genma immediately banged his head against the wall. "Not again, not
again..."
Kuonji continued, "Your child is to be the heir of the Anything Goes
school piloting right?"
Genma nodded.
"Well, I now have a daughter, and I want an heir to my own family. I
want to engage your son to be son to my daughter."
Genma sagged. (What to do? What to do? I want the two schools of
Anything Goes to unite, not the Saotome school and some cooking school!)
Happosi grabbed Genma and turned him aside. "Agree boy, it's the only
way you'll be able to afford it," he hissed.
Genma was again forced to agree.
****************
"Nodoka-chan, Nodoka-chan, wake up. It's time for you to meet your
son."
The insistent voice nagged at Nodoka until she awoke. She opened
blurry eyes to see Genma standing near holding a cute little baby. Her
baby. Her eyes flew wide as she sat up quickly.
"Easy Nodoka-chan," Genma urged. "Here, meet your son." He handed the
baby to her. She fought the surge of dizziness to accept the child. He
muscles felt strangely weak.
"My son...," she trailed off as she gazed at her child. Her brow
creased in puzzlement. "My son? I thought the nurse said we had a
daughter?" Her heart sped up.
Genma faked a confused expression. Fortunately for him, his wife was
still under the influence of various drugs. "A daughter? No, no, no."
He laughed nervously, hand behind his head. "You must have been
hallucinating. You had a heart attack shortly after the doctor told us
you couldn't have any more children. You've been unconscious over a
week." His expression changed. "I just want you to know, I still love
you. I'll always love you, and I'll stand by your side no matter
what." He held her hand tightly. Whatever doubts she may have had
concerning his acting, she knew when he was telling the truth, and felt
nothing but love for him then.
Genma kissed her, and backed off to look at his son. "What will we
name him?" he asked.
Nodoka also looked down at her son. "Ranma," she said simply.
****************
Genma stood over Ranma's crib and made goo goo noises down into it.
This was odd behavior for him. Not because he had trouble expressing
himself, which he did, or because he looked silly doing it, which he
did, but because the crib only contained a pillow covered by a blanket,
which it did. Genma didn't notice.
Nodoka walked in from the other part of the house where she had bathed
Ranma, but stopped in the doorway to watch her husband. She was under
strict orders to take it easy around the house, and Genma had done
admirably in his attempt to help. He waved off her concerns about his
manliness, saying that his only concern was for her and Ranma. She was
very upset about not being able to fulfill her duties as a wife so her
husband could be a man, but Genma was nothing if not supportive and
helpful, pointing out that it wasn't her fault. She began to wonder if
that was not true manliness.
Standing there watching her husband make a fool of himself, she
suspected that it was true.
"Ahem," she interrupted.
Genma whirled to look at her. "Ah, heh, Nodoka-chan, eh heh, I was
just looking at Ranma..., heh."
Nodoka held Ranma against her hip. "I can see that."
Genma spotted the child, then looked at her. He blushed red.
Nodoka laughed and crossed to kiss him and lay Ranma down in the crib.
Ranma was sure a quiet baby, hardly ever crying unless he was hungry.
Of course, he was always hungry...
Genma came and hugged her from behind. He put his chin on her shoulder
as they gazed at their child.
"Such a touching sight. Sorry I have to interrupt it."
They both jerked around to the window, Genma sliding Nodoka behind him.
Happosi crouched on the sill, looking at them with a sarcastic smile.
He hopped off and jumped over to look at Ranma.
"Ah, a cute kid." He shook his head. "Such a waste... would have been
a beauty," he muttered to himself. Ranma started to cry.
Genma found his voice. "What do you want?" he said challengingly. He
would not let Happosi take his son. No matter what.
Happosi leveled a glare at him that said, 'So, you think you're man
enough?'
Out loud, he said, "I have news. We need to speak in private..., boy."
Genma had to fight to avoid stepping back. "Nodoka, take Ranma and
go. We have business to discuss."
Nodoka nodded and hurried forward. She grabbed Ranma and left,
muttering soothing noises at him.
Happosi looked Genma over. "Feeling cheeky today, eh boy? Well I have
no time for that. I have news."
Genma stood his ground. "So you say. What news?"
"I know you want to unite the Tendo and the Saotome schools. Soun and
Kimiko have already had two sons, and Kimiko is pregnant. It will be a
little difficult for you to unite the schools with nothing but boys now
won't it?"
Genma paled. He'd never though of that. He'd known Soun had two sons,
and that Kimiko was pregnant, but the consequences of his actions never
crossed his mind.
Happosi smirked. "I see you finally understand. Well I also have an
interest in joining the schools." His tone turned serious. "I have
heard that Kimiko is pregnant with another son."
Genma's fears were realized. He sagged. "But, what can we do?"
Happosi looked at him with contempt. "Is it not obvious, even to a
fool like you? We simply have a second operation."
Genma shook his head. "I don't think Nodoka will go for that."
Happosi hit him on the head. "Not on your son, stupid. Soun's
newest."
Genma brightened a bit, but paused. "I don't think Soun will go for
that."
"Who said anything about telling him? We're going to kidnap the kid
right after birth, before they ever know what it is. Later, we return
the little girl."
Genma was faced with a moral dilemma. Ask his friend and risk the
answer being no? Or betray his trust and have it done? Soun wanted
the schools to unite just like him, they had made a contract, but did he
want it that badly...
Genma looked up at Happosi and gave him his answer.
****************
"Another operation you say? Heh, well, they say practice makes
perfect..." Kuonji held the phone lightly. He crossed over to a small
crib where a baby girl could be seen asleep and looked at her. "Yes,
the operation can go in reverse, just as functional." He lightly rubbed
the baby's back with one hand. "Okay, I'll get my things. We'll
discuss payment when I get there." He hung the phone up.
Looking down into the crib, he said softly, "Don't worry honey, Daddy's
gonna make sure your future is bright."
****************
Genma stared at the man across from him. "Kuonji, I can't do that."
Kuonji leaned forward and clenched his fist. "But you can! And you
will. You will take my daughter Ukyo and train her to be a pilot. And
I will train her in our family martial arts."
"But she is far too young! I can't start training now! You at least
have to wait until they can walk," Genma protested.
"No, not now. We will wait, say until they are five? Then you will
take my daughter." He leaned back. "You have already agreed to the
engagement, you may as well agree to this." Then he jerked forward.
"Unless you are planning on reneging on our deal?" he said suspiciously.
"No, no no no. A deal is a deal after all." Genma thought rapidly.
(Five years, I have five years to think of a plan.) "You drive a hard
bargain Kuonji. I agree."
They shook hands.
"Good," said Kuonji. "We agree. Now to the matter at hand. You
realized that by continuing their ignorance, we can't just tell them to
carry the child to checkups more often, nor can we tell them to give
specific instructions to the doctors?"
"I believe I have an answer to that question."
Both turned to see Happosi, who had just walked in. He gestured behind
him, and a tall man wearing a gi and glasses walked in. Both men
blinked. He was pulling a skeleton on a rack.
"Boys, meet Dr. Tofu. He owes me, so to speak."
The doctor grunted.
Happosi sighed. "And Betty-chan."
Tofu walked forward. "I am the Tendo's family doctor, so they will not
suspect me of any unusual behavior."
Kuonji smiled. "Perfect. Here's what you have to do."
****************
The plan went off without a hitch, marred only by the death of Soun's
wife during labor. Genma had to comfort his friend, especially seeing
how the loss of his wife and the kidnapping of his 'daughter' pushed him
so close to the edge. The police apprehended the suspect, a known
criminal with a violent past, and retrieve the child. They did not
forget to thank the kindly old man who had turned him in.
The man repeatedly protested his innocence, but with the evidence right
there, he was convicted.
Soun took some comfort in the last gift his wife gave him, a little
girl she wanted named Akane.
Genma was able to forget that Ranma was born a girl for a time, until
he got close to five years old. Then the reminder of the price he'd had
to pay forced it's way into his mind. But he'd thought of a plan. He
used the Saotome final attack.
After convincing Nodoka to let him go, as much as he wanted to stay, he
took Ranma on a tour of the world, bargaining with the top aces for
training and finding the best simulators so he could be the best pilot
in the world. Physical training was also important, as it built
reflexes and tolerance ot high gee forces.
Should I just use the water and the ladle? Oh yeah, Ranma's not going
to be mister unbeatable. He's actually going to get his ass kicked
every now and then, at least when it comes to hand to hand fighting.
To Nabiki and Kasumi fans, sorry. They just didn't fit. I'll borrow
some of their main personality traits for the guys that have replaced
them, but we won't see Tofu goin ga ga over any of them (although...
gay Dr. Tofu? Hmm...), and no one wears an apron. To all those who
care, do you think Ukyo was originally a male? It seems like she was,
from little clues, but do you really think so? Influence me one way or
the other! It can go either way. Other characters may or may not show
up, depending. As far as who really ends up with Ranma in the end, he
going to be lucky if he ends up with ANYONE. I've got flexible plans.
What really makes a man? What really makes a woman? Is it the
equipment? The brain? The cultural attitudes? I leave you to think
about it, and please tell me.
