PROLOGUE
The mechanical doors to the Junon underwater acsessway protested as
they were opened for the first time in a long while, casting the hard white
glow of the elevator's interior upon the cold metal corridors that wound down
to the reactor itself. From inside stepped the silohuettes of three people,
thier slick business suits shining in the glow of the single light source.
Thier leader, a man with an angular face, cold eyes, and dark
sunglasses perched on the borderline of his flaming red hair, spiking out in
erratic angles, and ending with a small, equally spikey pony tail. Reno...
To his sides, stood his two companions, the petit, but enthusiastic
and tough Elena on his right, and the totally bald, giant of a man, Rude on
his left; he also wore glasses, covering his eyes despite the corridor's
darkness.
"Uh...Um? Would it be alright if I you know, got outta here now?" The
voice came from the elevator.
It belonged to a grissled man, dressed in a mechanics or engineers
garb. The man who had opened the welded door for them. He looked tough, but
was obviously afriad of what lurked down here.
Reno wondered if he was the same man who had sealed the doors two
years ago when, due to public fear of the mutations the reactor was causing,
the mayor ordered it shut off before it could be deactivated. As a result,
Junon, despite the world wide de-mako-ization treaty, still ran on lifestream
powered energy.
Reno smiled, and without turning to face the man responded. "Yeah,
get out of here. Just be back at the appointed time, we should have the
reactor cleared out by then alright?"
The man nodded profusely and manually slid the elevator doors shut,
before it lifted away, leaving the Turks alone in the utter darkness.
The features on Reno's face, if they could be seen in the blackness,
visibly relaxed.
He hefted his electro-magnetic rod and adjusted it's power settings.
"Let's shed a little light on the situation shall we?" He asked, in
definately more playful tone then when he spoke before, in front of the
engineer.
Hey, we do have a reputation to maintain. He thought to himself.
"What an illuminating concept." Rude replied
Reno triggered the small stave at a lower power setting, giving off
light, and the occasional bolts of electrical energy, instead of firing off a
blast of the stuff.
Elena nodded. "What an en-light-ened decision!" She commented.
Reno and Rude both turned to look at her simultaneously.
In the blue-tinted light Reno could be seen raising an eyebrow.
Elena gave them a cross look, and with her hands on her hips retorted.
"Hey! It's the best I could do in the time given!" She yelled.
Rude shook his head and Reno smiled.
"From now on, whenever you come up with something clever, you should
write it down and see if it comes in handy later."
"Haha." She laughed sarcastically." Now let's get on with this ya
dumb jerk."
"Dumb huh?" Reno asked as he proceeded down the darkened stairwell
that led to the transparent tube, which in turn led to the reactor. "Who's
the more foolish? The fool, or the fool that follows him?"
Elena threw her arms in the air, exasperated."Oh shut up!" She
muttered as she followed the bobbing orb of blue light before her. "Just shut
up!"
Rude got a deep chuckle out of the whole situation, then followed.
.....................
It wasn't long, after they navigated the corridors leading to, and
inside of the reactor till they reached it's core. A smooth metel shaft
ascending and descending vertically from the catwalk the Turks stood on. Down
below, steel pipelines plunged into a roiling mass of green fluid...
Lifestream. Reno thought. If I'd known what the stuff truly was, I
never would have gotten involved with Shinra.
After all, he didn't want his soul siphoned away after he was dead
just to power some yuppie's microwave oven. He blinked through the green
steam that rose from the pipelines below. It gave off a scent that was both
pleasant and eerie at the same time. To think that he was inhaleing the
restless souls of the dead. Reno shivered.
Best not to think about it.He decided.
"All right Turks." He motioned to a nearby service ladder on the far
wall, one that led to the core station below."Let's move out."
Slowly but surely they made thier way down to a platform that
encircled the main pipeline, attatched to which was the central service
station.
Reno analyzed the control board as he approached, covered by Rude and
Elena.
Standard Shinra configuration. he decided.
His fingers started playing across the keyboards, acsessing the
reactors emergency shutdown procedure when he noticed the keys were wet.
Lifting a finger, he noticed the green-ness of the liquid.
Lifestream. He thought. It's slick with the stuff.
He glanced above to where to segments of the pipeline were bolted
together, creating a platform above his head. A fine mist of lifestream
sprayed from a small gap in the corroded metel with a soft hiss.
That was sloppy of them. He thought.
He keyed in the sequence that allowed him to stop mako flow to this
pipeline.A gradually slowing whir, the pumping machines shutting down,
replaced the hiss of the escaping liqiud. He had only started the shutdown of
the secondary pipelines when the noise was replaced by a hissing of a
different kind as two small creatures, lizard-like but with sprawling limbs
like a monkey's, scrambled across from the other side of the piping, green
foam dripping from thier distended maws. Their eyes shone with a glow Reno
recognized all too much.
Reno took a step back in horror, his hand reaching for his rod as it
dawned on him.
"They've been feeding on it. On the lifestream!"
"Reno!" Rude's deep voice called to him.
He twirled to find, huge, bore-sized versions of the Mizards closing
in on Rude and Elena from a connecting catwalk. Thier four legs clomping
agianst the catwalk as thier tails twitched behind them, and they gnashed
thier jaws menacingly.
"We've got a problem here!"
Reno rushed to help when one of the smaller Mizards leapt at him from
the pipeline, screeching something horrible as it clasped to his neck with
it's claws.
The two larger ones began thier attack on the two defending Turks as
Reno struggled to tear the juvenile off.
Another screech, and the second young one launched itself at Reno.
Whipping out his rod with lightning speed, he swung it like a
baseball bat and it contacted the beasts belly with an audible smack. It
slammed agianst the pipeline and hit the ground, stunned, or dead.
The elder beasts suddenly became far more forocious at the sight of
thier little ones injury, and renewed thier attack on Rude and elena with
increases Vigor.
Reno threw himself onto his back, crushing the clasping Mizard's
undeveloped bones agianst the metal floor. Scraping off it's remians, still
frimly holding onto his neck, with his rod, he rushed to assist his two
comrades.
A single Mizard reared up on it's hind legs before them, and Rude got
in a solid three-punch combo before the creature retaliated with a swipe of
it's tail.
Reno joined Elena, who's gunshot's were having a hard time
penetrating a single Mizard's armor, which the other lacked.
Reno parried a blow from it's tial, sending a jolt down it's length,
and countered by jamming one of the rod's blunt ends into it's head.
"Shoot at the other one fool!" He shouted, directing elena towards
the unarmored creature, who held Rude at bay with a chill ice spell.
She turned the gun towards the other, but the armored one scuttled
before her and stood on it's hind legs, blocking the shot.
Elena jinked the gun back and forth, hoping to find an opening, but
it was no use, the Mizard just swayed to keep it's armored skin between Elena
and it's mate.
"Let me handle this!" Reno chided her, his finger caressing the
Deathblow Materia embedded in his rod. Suddenly, a renewed strength filled
him, and he jammed the electro-mag rod into the beasts belly at full force.
Electricity filled the air, and the vicinty was filled with a
blinding blue light as electro-magnetic force flowed into the body of the
creature, Reno grit his teeth as jammed the rod even further, before finally
withdrawing, leaving only a corpse charred beyond recognition, and the smell
of burnt lizard behind. It fell to the ground, it's head scattering into
crispy ashes around a singed skull.
The second beast, who had built up an ice wall blocking Rude from it
was enraged with the death of it's mate, and lunged at Reno, it's flight
knocking Elena into the platforms railing.
She rubbed her head where it had hit, and stared at the Mizard
angrily where it grapled with Reno.
"Oh I've had enough of this!" She grumbled as she pulled herself to
her feet.
Releasing the cartridge from her gun, she replaced it with another.
She jammed the new LIMIT, explosive bullets into the chamber and took aim.
She gave Reno a grim look and he nodded.
Rolling onto his back, he brought the Mizard on top of him and
planted his foot firmly on it's chest, with a powerful kick, the beast was
propelled into the air,
Elena fired six shots into it's belly and it exploded before it could
even hit the ground, showering Reno with Mizard guts.
A grossed-out look crossed with face as he rose to his feet, scraping
off entrails with his bare hands.
"Well THAT was unpleasant!" He commented.
Elena shrugged. "Hey thier all dead aren't they?"
Rude, who had managed to cut through the ice wal with his bare fists,
now covered in tiny scratches, chuckled. "But at the cost of Reno's new suit."
Reno was annoyed."Alright, alright, now that everyone's gotten a good
laugh at my expense, can we move on?"
He and the others stepped towards the console when the first juvenile
Mizard, pulled itself up from the ground, and the newly concious beast
renewed it's attack on Reno. But this time he was ready and he jammed his
electro-mag rod at it on fulled power. The beast was sent flying into the
cosole where's it's electrified body sent cascades of blue lightning across
the control board.
When the beast lay dead, sparks continued to fly from the board, a
view screen was catapulted from it's frame by an internal explosion.
Reno ran to the console and reached it just as the alarms started to
blare. The lights all over the chamber turned a bright crimson, indicative of
the new state of emergency, contrasting with the green glow of lifestream.
"What the hell is going on!?" Rude shouted over the din as Reno's
fingers danced across the keyboards.
Reno shook his head in amazement."The little bastard managed to blow
the coolant regulation system! Portions of the reactor are now dangerously
close to going critical!"
Elena scratched her head."And this means...?"
Reno gave her a cold stare, the red lights reflecting off his ice
blue iris'.
"It means, we get the hell out of here...NOW!"
