The AMS source material is internally inconsistent, but any fanfic author
is very likely to try to force what they know of the story into an
internally consistent framework.

For example, in my stories Kamisama is invariably Belldandy's father.
This assertion is NOT supported by any reasonable reading of the series,
but works well enough for my uses.

There are other series that are far worse off. When writing a Sailor Moon
story the author will frequently state if they are following the manga,
the anime or the DICs. El Hazard is neatly divided between "the real
series" and "The Wanderers" (I have got such a neat idea for a x-over
between the two...)

Tenchi is the worst I've seen. The first paragraph of any Tenchi story
usually notes which of the OAVs, Movies, Manga and TV shows are getting
mixed together. ("Mihoshi was in the cave, Ryo-oh-ki was given to Tenchi
years ago by his grandfather. Sasami is Tenchi's sister and Ayeka and
Ryoko are his classmates.")
