     It was mind-numbingly simple.
The scientist's name was Doctor Keiichi Asagiri. The characters
of his name, if you asked him to explain them, translated out as 'First
Facet of Morning's Duty.' He was rather proud of his name, and intended
that one day everyone in the world would know it.
     And respect it.
Dr. Asagiri peered over his notes and swept a scanning device
along the walls of the tomb. "Higher readings here..." he muttered
absently. "I'm close..." He continued down the hall, deep beneath the
surface of the earth. He wore his ever-present goggles over his eyes,
the lenses acting as 'starlight' optics.
     His scanner red-lined.
"Bingo," he murmured in almost sacrosanct tones.
He leafed through his notebook and looked at one of the walls. He
held out a hand and began tracing a pattern on the dimly illuminated
wall. Lines he touched glowed in a sift, blue hue as he completed his
task. "Open wide the gates of time...." he intoned softly.
The wall rumbled softly, the lines flaring.
The wall slid out of the way, passage deeper into the ground.
Dr. Asagiri continued on his way.
Some may think it odd that a man would be traipsing around in old
tombs alone. They would, of course be right. However, the unusual was
Dr. Asagiri's forte and crazed ventures were in his blood. To hear him
tell it, he was from a long, proud line of slightly cracked scientists.
Many of the men in his family were slightly cracked scientists.
Many of them also died rather young.
Mad scientist attrition rates do tend to be rather steep...
The scientist skulked his way deep into the tomb, and came to a
sealed door. The seal on the door itself was complex in design and made
of wax.
     A true work of art.
Dr. Asagiri regarded the seal for a moment pondering it.
He then calmly pulled it off the door, tossing it aside.
Certainly it was a valuable piece of history, but what, according to a
hundred folk tales in the surrounding villages, was beyond that door was
far more valuable than anything else on the planet.
He leaned into the door and shoved it open with a heave.
Blue light shone so brightly from within that he had to turn off
his starlight amplification and make the lenses pseudo-transparent, they
still looked black from the outside, while they were transparent on the
inside.
Never ask how his inventions work... You probably won't like the
answer he might give.
"How deep does the rabbit hole go?" Dr. Asagiri wondered as he
reached out to touch something...
And there was a blinding flash of blue light.
     And all was still...

     The Man in Black dreamed...
"Keep away from her!" he snarled, flames erupting from his hands
to fill several mystical spheres in orbit around him.
Kunzite simply smiled and surrounded both himself and his hostage
in an aura of unholy power. "Attack me and I use this field to channel
your power into her. The Lady Lorelei will be slain by her husband's
hand... or Sepirot to be exact.." he chided.
The Man in Black canceled the spheres.
The fallen Guardian smiled and rammed a blade of pinkish energy
through his hostage's back. "Now did I say I was going to let her
live?" he asked the dumbstruck mage.
The Man in Black groaned... the image of his wife's shocked
expression and choking scream of horror searing into his eyes and ears.
He felt as if his heart had stopped. He couldn't move, his arms and
legs felt as lead.
The Source was silent where it normally called to him in
neverending song... His magic useless...
The Man in Black stayed asleep, locked in his nightmare.
The Man in Black's body snapped awake with a soundless scream at
his lips. He struggled to catch his breath for several moments, trying
to take in air with lungs that seemed to have forgotten their duty.
He finally took in a breath and collapsed like a puppet with cut
strings. He struggled weakly to get untangled from his bedsheets, but
wound up more throughly mired than before.
     Not that it mattered overmuch...
He couldn't escape the image burning in his mind.
A woman he didn't know, slain in front of him...
Why was it he felt dead?

The substitute teacher in English class was even more boring than
Satori-sensei tended to be. She clearly didn't want to be there, and
certainly wasn't thrilled at the prospect of teaching English out of a
book to them.
Satori-sensei had called in half-dead, he'd woken up with
something that looked a great deal like the measles. His illness meant
he was *not* going to be in class for a while.
Thus Usagi and her classmates were stuck with a little old lady
who wanted desperately to go back to the library.

Souichi Tomoe and his daughter waited on the front porch of their
home, enjoying the warmth of the early summer afternoon and waiting.
"He'll be here soon..." he remarked.
"Is Setsuna-mama beginning to rub off on you, Daddy?" Hotaru
asked. She sipped absently at some tea, enjoying the vista of the
approaching sunset.
"No.. I hear his motorcycle," he replied with a grin.
Shortly the man in question rounded the corner on his noisy
motorcycle. He pulled up into the driveway and brought the bike to a
halt, stopping the engine. He pulled his goggles up to his forehead and
clambered off, spreading his arms wide. "Buddha, Hotaru you've grown!"
he said with a huge grin.
Hotaru could barely remember the cousin who so resembled her
father... He was actually younger than her own father by a few years,
and
had a moustache and beard, unlike her father.
But they had almost the same build and the same, silvery hair...
"Come give 'Crazy Kei' a hug!" he bellowed, pulling a small bundle
out of his coat. "I even have a present for you!"
Hotaru smiled at that, remembering the funny man that looked so
much like her father. The smiling one who always brought the nicest
presents....
She stood up and gave the hug her cousin had asked for.
She wrinkled her nose. "You still smoke cigars..." she murmured.
Keiichi chuckled and scratched the back of his head absently.
"Some habits are had to break.. Sort of like getting lost in old caves
I guess...." he remarked. He messed up her hair and then slung her over
his shoulder, heading to the porch. "So Cousin, is this yours?" he
asked.
Hotaru laughed and pounded playfully on Kei's back.
"I suppose so..." his first cousin said with a faint chuckle.
"Set her down and come inside. We've got a lot to catch up on..." he
said.
Keiichi nodded and smiled. "You have no idea...." he replied. He
set Hotaru down, who was giggling uncontrollably, and handed her the
present he'd brought for her and dashed back to his bike for his
luggage. "I really do have to thank you for letting me stay for a
couple of days.... You told me this place has become a sort of
apartment complex since I last visited..."
"There's always room for one more..." Souichi said in a mysterious
tone of voice.
Kei shrugged and waited for Hotaru to go in after her father.
"And no opening that until I've gotten these bags upstairs, I want to
see the expression on your face when I'm not weighed down..." he
scolded.
Hotaru hid the scissors from the hallway's table behind her back.
"Of course I was going to wait..." she said innocently.

     Usagi dreamed...
The sound of quiet sobbing came from the door she stood in front
of. Selenity paused, her knuckle hovering an inch from the wood. She
gulped and rapped at the door quietly.
"Go away..." a voice said in a dejected voice.
"Tabris, you cannot hide in there forever..." she said kindly.
"Please, let me open the door..."
She heard the door unlatch. She opened the door and walked in
slowly. The man she'd called Tabris looked like he'd been wrung out.
He was dressed all in black, but his jacket was hanging open and
the medallion he normally wore under the jacket was hanging out. He was
seated in a chair out on the balcony, his elbows propped on his knees
and his face buried in his hands.
"Brother, look at me..." she murmured.
Tabris' golden eyes, bloodshot, met her own as he sat more
upright. "I'm the walking dead.... Let me die in peace.." he rasped.
The tone in his voice was painful, like someone who had resigned himself
to the concept of being completely, and utterly alone.
Usagi howled in frustration as her alarm clock went off.

Next Time on Legacy...

A rather plain man cackles madly as he is burned alive...

Keiichi laughs as he cracks his knuckles. "For years I've been
looking for that mausoleum. The scientific community said I was mad for
trying to find it.. Well, Cousin, I found it..." he purrs. "The Crypt
of Endymion, the man placed into eternal sleep by the Moon Goddess to
preserve his beauty for all time."
     Setsuna looks nonplussed.
     Haruka spits out her coffee.
Hotaru looks at her cousin oddly.

The Man in Black murmurs, "The Moon carries the Voice of Memory."
