An SI is not a story. It's a fantasy.

It depends what "SI" means to you. Was Borges simply
fantasizing about Beatriz in "El Aleph"?

Self-insertion can be a far more complex device than
the simplistic melodramatic pulp you mention. The fact
that it's usually not exploited in a manner befitting
its strengths is a shortcoming of the author, not the
form.
