episode 2 - More things revealed! Also much ado about cats
"And that's how we showed him!" Explained Meagen cheerfully before
taking another bite from the apple she was holding. Agnes put away
another page and started to read the next one.
Suddenly, the usually wood-like face was covered with a tomato-red
blush. Agnes threw the page she had been looking at away with disgust
and announced in her usual unemotional voice: "You really COULD have
cut this part out."
"Huh?" Meagen blinked, stopping short of another bite. "Whaddia
mean?" She picked up the page from the floor. As soon as she glanced
at it, she blushed even redder than her friend and exclaimed: "Ewww,
how did THAT ONE get in there?" She quickly tore the paper into a lot
of pieces and threw them into the trash bin, still blushing.
She stopped short of a bite again and glanced at the apple uncer-
tainly.
The half-eaten fruit soon joined the torn paper.
After reading through the rest of the Internet conversation print-
out (thankfully without further surprises), Agnes gathered it up and
gave back to its owner. Then she said:
"There is one thing about this that I can't understand."
"What's that?"
"How could you stand talking to a person with _totally_ different
interests and opinions than you for a dozen pages and not getting
one of your screaming fits like you would in real life."
Iris, the red-striped talking cat, had been the only one to see
Meagen while the latter was chatting on Internet. If she were in the
empty classroom with the two girls, and if she was allowed to speak
freely, she would probably tell Agnes something like:
"Actually, Meagen _does_ get into screaming fits when meeting people
with opinions too much unlike her own on the Net. But since they can
only see what she types in, she can scream and throw pillows (and
many less soft objects. ouch.) as much as she wants, and then sit
down and have a calm and constructive discussion, which would usually
be impossible."
But since Iris was nowhere around, Meagen could easily get away with
flashing a smile and saying nonchalantly: "Oh, I can control myself
perfectly if I only want to."
At that moment, Melissa walked into the class. Meagen noticed that
she was very excited about something. She went to talk to her.
"Hey, Mel. What's up? You look like you've just seen one of those
Chinks that have eyes like saucers."
"They're Japanese." Melissa corrected, hastily and without paying
much attention. "Meagen, did you hear the NEWS? There's a Sailor
Senshi RIGHT HERE! Right in New York!"
"Oh my. Those papers will think of just about anything to fill up
their empty space, don't you think?"
"You don't understand! I didn't READ about it! I SAW her!"
"You what?"
"I saw her! Last evening, when I was doing my homework, I just
lifted my head for a second and saw a girl run by my house at super
high speed! I didn't take a good look, but I'm CERTAIN that I saw two
bows and a short skirt.
"Unfortunately, when I ran out and looked around, there was no one
there... But I'm SURE I saw her! And she was a Sailor Senshi!"
"Yeah, and I suppose she was going to fight evil yuckies, as all
Sailor Shenzies are supposed to." Meagen paused and added in a more
serious tone: "Mel, you must be seeing things. That Jap stuff is
damaging your brain."
Melissa gave Meagen a long, piercing stare. Then she waved her hand.
"Aw, forget it." She opened her bag and started to look for some-
thing. The huge amounts of various papers made it quite difficult.
Meagen watched Melissa search through the pile of notes, drawings,
short poems, doodles and even some candy wrappings. After a while she
observed: "You should really clean up that thing. Put out all the
trash, stash things you don't need immediately in a drawer,
eggcereita."
"Like I have time for that." Melissa answered absently, without
stopping her search and paying no attention to Meagen's rather weird
mispronunciation of 'et cetera'. Finally she pulled out another
Japanese magazine.
As Meagen saw it, she had an idea. "Say, could you look through your
magma papers and see if you have anything else on those Sailors? I'd
rather know more about them if they're really showing up here."
Melissa put the magazine on her desk. "First, it's MANGA, and
second, yes I could. I'll bring some old 'Anime-Guide's tomorrow."
"Thanks." Meagen headed back to her desk and Melissa opened her
magazine.
That afternoon, Meagen was having another Internet chat.
"Right on, Annie!" She shouted at the computer screen. After a while
she screamed "WHAT?!?! Get a life, you JERK!" And she started typing
furiously. Then she paused and stroke ENTER with a large gesture.
Iris yawned. This had been going on for the past fifty minutes or
so.
Meagen moved the mouse and clicked.
"WHA?! AN HOUR?!?! I've been here for ONE WHOLE FREAKING HOUR!!!
I gotta go!"
More typing. Then another scream:
"So that's the way you wanna play?!?! Okay!!! I'll show you!!!!"
Iris jumped off Meagen's bed with a sigh. She went out.
*Knowing that girl, this could last a LONG time.*
"Deadly Twinkle."
"Yes, Mistress?"
"You have failed. You have not located the formula and you have
lost a Thinker."
"I beg that your forgive me, Mistress Pandora. It was only my first
try, there was not a very large chance of success. Plus, I was not
ready for this... Sailor Andromeda. This time, I will kill her."
"Are you sure?" Sounded a voice mockingly. Deadly Twinkle frowned.
"You haven't done anything yet, you know." She remarked silently.
"That's what you think." The other girl stepped forward. She had
red eyes and brown hair with yellow highlights. It was done in an
oval bun on the right side of her head with a long ponytail hanging
from it. Her suit was like Deadly Twinkle's, but it was yellow, with
black tiger-like stripes of fur all over it, and sleeveless.
The girl had very short gloves, yellow with a ring of black fur
around the wrist. She was wearing black high heels and had a staff
with a V-fork on the top. Two black cat-like paws were on the ends of
the branches. The staff's color changed gradually from black on the
forked end to yellow at the other.
"I have a plan." She said.
"I'm not interested." Snapped Twinkle, but Pandora cut her off.
"Please tell me your plan, Tiger Lily."
A woman with her straight red hair tied up in a ponytail that
reached the middle of her back was typing something on a computer.
Iris walked in and jumped on the desk.
"Good morning, Iris." Said the woman taking her hands off the key-
board and turning her head to the cat.
Iris nodded before replying "Reporting back, 'mam."
"As Deadly Twinkle observed a while ago, it is quite hard to find
the formula by picking only one human at a time. My idea is to hit on
a larger group, thus raising the chances of finding the right one."
Explained Tiger Lily.
"And how do you plan to do that." Said Pandora without any emotion
in her voice.
"By using a special type of Thinker, one intelligent enough to
harvest and check human minds on its own."
"A lot of brains means no actual power", pointed out Deadly Twinkle,
"Sailor Andromeda will tear that kind of Thinker apart before it
figures out what happened."
"I am quite aware of that girl's possibilities", said Tiger Lily
calmly, "and I can assume that all she has is physical strength. She
will be no match for a creature capable of strategic thinking."
"How can you be so sure? We've only seen her in battle once!"
"And not too much of that, since _someone_ left early." Pandora laid
a bit of pressure on "someone", but still spoke quietly.
Twinkle shrank back. She mumbled something in the tone of another
apology and turned back to Tiger Lily. "Finding a lot of human minds
means finding a lot of useless ones. Where could you find lots of
humans that are all or mostly brilliant?"
"Right here." Answered her rival motioning to a computer behind
her. "Anyone today with at least a bit of intelligence is connected
to the Internet. I have created a program that sends a Thinker by
electronic mail. When the victim opens the mailbox, their mind is
taken and checked. If the formula is found, I will be informed
without hesitation. If not, the program carries out step two. It
checks the victim's address book and sends a copy of the Thinker to
every address. This not only creates a large circle of potential
brilliant minds, but is also nearly undetectable, since the only way
anyone could know of it is to become one of the victims. And the
victims can't alert anyone. So, even if Sailor Andromeda stumbles
into the scheme by accident", Tiger Lily grinned, "We'll just have
one more mind."
"Very well. You may carry out the operation." said Pandora, still
quietly. Then she walked away, slowly and with a certain dignity.
"Well, Ding-a-ling... looks like I'm getting the glory and you're
getting the grave." Chuckled Lily.
"We'll see... Furball."
*********************************************************************
Meagen was walking down the street, quite happy. The afternoon had
been great; after telling the Annoying Guy of the Day exactly what
they thought of him, she and Ann had arranged to meet up and go
shopping. Then she disconnected from the Internet.
*This is what I call fun.* Thought Meagen. *First talking on the
'Net to someone I like for a while, and then going shopping with the
same person.*
Suddenly Meagen felt someone was watching her. She twirled around
and looked up the street, but there was nobody there.
She shrugged her shoulders and turned to continue her walk.
She didn't see anything coming... until it was too late.
A rather large, furry object collided with her shoulder. Taken
completely by surprise, she lost her balance and fell flat down on
her face.
She was so stunned it took her brain a few good seconds to register
a few facts. One, she was spread across the sidewalk. Two, there was
a sharp pain in her knee, showing the probability of a bruise.
After a grunt, a hiss and a few curses, Meagen's brain registered
fact three.
The large, furry object that caused her fall was still on her
shoulder. She turned her head to look at it.
It was a little black kitten which was currently licking its paw
with a big, pink tongue.
"Hello there..." Whispered Meagen, forgetting all about her knee.
She twisted and sat up, taking the cat in her arms. Suddenly the
knee reminded her of its presence. She hissed again and the kitten
looked at her with astonishment.
"You shouldn't jump on people like that, you know." She told it,
making a half-smile through a painful expression. The kitten purred
in response.
Meagen stood up with a few more hisses, patted the kitten and put
it down. Then, limping, she headed home.
The kitten looked at her for a while, and then followed her.
"I'm home!" Announced Meagen before shutting the door behind her.
The kitten stopped at the edge of the garden. It sat down and peeked
inside. Suddenly, it heard something from behind. It looked around.
Ann jumped into her room. She threw the bags she had been carrying
on her bed and sat down next to her computer. She switched it on and
opened a file.
It was a copy of the conversation she and Meagen had had with the
Annoying Person of the Day a few hours before. Ann re-read it with
a smile, and then glanced at the clock.
"I think I'll do my homework now... Right after I check my mail."
Ann clicked with her mouse for a while, and then waited. The screen
flashed and then showed the contents of her inbox.
"Yay! Someone wrote!" She exclaimed happily. Then she moved her
mouse and clicked.
In an instant, a very bright light beam shot out of the computer
screen and hit Ann's head. As the room was illuminated with prismatic
colors, a small, glass-like pyramid appeared in front of Ann and was
immediately sucked into the screen. The girl's head hung down as the
colored light faded away.
Then the room went silent.
Somewhere in the depths of sub-space, a red light lit up. The newly
found mind did not contain the formula.
The address book was quickly found and copies of the program were
sent to every address.
And the last one was meagen_k@fastweb.com .
The black kitten walked into Meagen's room and jumped on her desk.
"Hello there..." Said Meagen, who was currently trying to get some
homework done. "And whom might you be?"
"His name is Blacky." Announced Iris, walking into the room.
"Oh." Meagen was slightly surprised. "Did he tell you that?"
"Of course he did. I'm not a mind-reader, you know."
"Oh." Repeated Meagen. Then she added, sarcastically: "You're just
an average, red-striped talking cat with a blue star on the forehead,
that's all."
"Your point?"
Meagen waved her hand. "Never mind."
Iris coughed. "_Anyway_, Blacky wants to live with you. He met you
in the street and followed you home. I found him at your gate. And I
know very well that you don't have a reason not to have a cat."
Meagen frowned. "But I already have _you_, Iris, and I can't just go
and keep any of your friends in my house. I don't run a home for poor
cats."
Iris looked away. "You don't 'have' me, Meagen. I live here because
I need to. But that doesn't make me _your_ cat."
Meagen looked at Iris for a few whiles, but it seemed the cat wasn't
going to continue. With a sigh, she patted Blacky, shoved her
homework away "for later" and turned to her computer.
She decided to go check her mail and then visit a few websites.
As Meagen logged into FastWeb where her account was, Iris felt
something. There were some very strong evil vibes around, but she
couldn't pinpoint their source. She closed her eyes and concentrated.
Meagen saw a letter in her inbox. It was from someone she didn't
remember writing to. Always eager to make new friends, she clicked on
that letter first.
Iris chose precisely that moment to mumble: "I've almost got it...",
causing Meagen to lean over to ask: "What's up?".
The result was that instead of Meagen, the weird beam that shot out
of the computer hit Blacky, who had been sitting in front of Meagen
all the time. A crystal mind pyramid, looking exactly like a human
one, only smaller, was sucked into the screen. The black kitten
collapsed on the desk, unconscious.
Meagen and Iris both stared in shock. Iris was the first to snap out
of it. "That's it! The computer! It's the enemies again! Meagen!"
she exclaimed. Meagen shook her head, but still looked dazed. Iris
repeated louder: "MEAGEN! We have to act fast! Do you have a
microphone on this computer?"
Meagen nodded. She pulled the said object out of a side cabinet.
"I don't really use it, but it's plugged in." She explained.
"Now let me have that keyboard. And transform. Hurry up, we don't
have time to lose!"
Meagen nodded. She pulled her pen out of her pocket, raised her hand
and took a deep breath...
And then she put her arm back down.
"What's wrong?!?!" Iris nearly screamed.
"Um... How did that go again?"
"It's 'Andromeda power, make up!'. Now SAY IT!!!!" Iris turned to
the computer and started typing quickly. (Or rather, as quickly as
she could. Which was not that fast, considering that she had paws
which were made to catch small animals.)
This time, Meagen braced herself mentally before shouting the
phrase. But still, with all the weird music, the swirling colors and
the long and complicated aerobics display, the transformation left
her quite dazed.
When she was able to see her room again, she found that Iris had
managed to get in touch with someone and was currently talking to
them through the microphone. "Try a negative hyperiodic cosmission."
A voice responded through the speakers of Meagen's PC. "Right. It
should work unless they have some microspacial harmonences set up."
"I don't think they do." Answered Iris. "That beam just takes a
few seconds. I can suppose that the best they have are transletal
reticumulations."
The voice went silent for a moment, then continued: "You were
right. I'll just disembargate those reticuluminations and I can
start brealangating an interroutalus." It was clearly a woman speak-
ing. She sounded vaguely familiar to Meagen. "Okay, I've got it. The
interroutalus should be on now."
Iris jumped down from Meagen's desk as another beam shot through
the room. "Sailor Andromeda," she said, "touch the beam and you
should get to the Thinker behind this operation. I suspect that it's
already stolen several human minds. Destroy it and these minds should
return to their bodies."
Sailor Andromeda nodded.
*********************************************************************
"Iris?" Said the voice from the speakers. "I can see it now. It
doesn't appear to have noticed the interroutalus."
"Understood." Iris responded and then turned to Sailor Andromeda.
"We're in luck. Now just touch the beam."
So she did.
*MAN! And I thought that transformation thing was bad!* Were the
first words that came into her mind. Her brain had barely started
recording the wild, breath-taking fast ride, full of flashing
lights, weird things brushing past every instant and more colors
than a spectrum could possibly hold.
She looked around. She was standing on something hard and steel
blue. Around her was a space clouded with prismatic swirls which
seemed very distant and very close at the same time.
And in front of her was the Thinker.
It was a dark blue, human-like figure, slightly taller than Meagen.
Its ears were long and pointy and there was no hair on its round
head. If it had been a human, it would have been naked. But as it was
a demon cyberspace output, it was only simplified.
The Thinker had its back turned to Sailor Andromeda; it did not
appear to have noticed her. However, when she moved closer, it looked
over its shoulder. Its eyes were two yellow, glowing slots, and it
had no nose or mouth.
"Intruder found." Announced a metallic, synthetic-like voice.
"Identified as Sailor Andromeda. Directive: Kill." The Thinker turned
around to face her, showing that it was armed with long and probably
sharp claws, and started to strife to her right. She turned as it did
so, not moving from her position.
Suddenly, she felt the air - or whatever that was all around them -
get thicker. Small shimmers appeared, floating around. She ignored
them, focusing on the Thinker. It was still circling her without
attacking.
The voice that she had heard from her computer sounded again.
"Andromeda! Behind you!"
Meagen twirled around and understood the Thinker's plan. It had been
making a copy of itself behind her back. The copy was still a bit
fuzzy, but was solidifying every second.
Sailor Andromeda kicked it as hard as she could. It made a buzzing
noise and vanished.
"Dodge!!!" Yelled the voice. She jumped to the side as the Thinker
flew forward, its long claws first, through the spot where she had
been standing. If she had tried to turn around, she would have been
torn apart.
Now, however, the Thinker was flying forward on its own impact. She
saw that she had a chance. And she grasped it.
"Cosmic LASERBEAM!!!" The ray struck the Thinker and it turned to
dust.
The prismatic swirls which have been floating around all turned into
crystal pyramids of various sizes which quickly flew up until they
were out of sight.
Sailor Andromeda relaxed and was just about to look for a way out
when Tiger Lily appeared.
"I must admit that I am impressed." Announced the villainess. "You
have destroyed my operation. However, you shall die here."
"We'll see." Said Meagen. Without warning, she jumped forward and
charged. She threw a punch at Tiger Lily. But the other girl wasn't
there anymore.
Time seemed to slow down for Sailor Andromeda as she fell forward,
making the same mistake the Thinker had made a few moments earlier.
Tiger Lily was right behind her, a devilish grin on her face. She
was holding her staff over her head. Then she brought it down.
Sailor Andromeda felt almost suspended in mid-air as the sharp
blades on the ends of the staff soared down. That single instant
seemed to stretch into an eternity.
Suddenly, just as the steel was about to slice her, she was pulled
up. She flew, higher and higher, faster and faster, through another
shining and shimmering tunnel...
And to safety. She crashed through a computer screen into a small
room. The thick carpet broke her fall.
Meagen looked behind her. Next to the computer sat Sailor Mintah.
She looked worried. "Are you all right?" she asked Meagen.
"Yeah. Thanks to you, I suppose."
The other soldier frowned. "Not thanks to yourself. Attacking Tiger
Lily was very stupid. I barely got you back in time."
Meagen smiled. "Well, you did, so let's just be glad about it. And
I'll beat her up yet, don't you worry."
Sailor Mintah also smiled. "I'm sure you will."
Meagen had a better look at her friend's uniform. It was slightly
different than her own. The sailor collar and skirt were a very
light, almost cream, orange. The bow was light brown, and the light
orange brooch holding it in place was star-shaped. Her gloves were
different than Meagen's; instead of three puffs, they had two light
brown, flat trimmings each. The bracelets which Meagen had already
noticed were made of light orange pearls. The stars in them were
light brown and each star had a golden gem in the middle.
Sailor Mintah's skirt had a light brown bow in the back. Her shoes
were light orange low-heels with two stripes making an X on her ankle
and a third stripe surrounding her leg over that.
Her light brown choker had a silver circle with a golden capital M
on it. In her golden tiara was set a brown gem.
Her earrings were light orange dots with smaller dots hanging from
them, and even smaller ones from those.
Mintah's long, red hair was divided into two ponytails with two
pieces of light orange ribbon.
Meagen sighed and got up. Suddenly, she noticed a tall mirror on
the wall. Looking into it, she examined her costume thoughtfully.
She noticed that her skirt also had a bow in the back. It was pink,
just as her front one. She took a closer look at her jewelry: the
purple gem in the tiara, the single purple dot earrings and the plain
choker. Suddenly, something caught her attention. She stared at the
mirror for a moment, wondering what seemed so wrong.
"You should be going home, I think." Sailor Mintah said after a long
silence.
"What? Oh, right. Um, where are we again?"
"This is the New York State Scientific Research Facility on Cherry
Hill Street."
Meagen stood silent for a while, recalling the place and figuring
the shortest way home. Then she smiled again. "Thanks", she said,
and left.
As she ran home, Meagen admired Sailor Mintah's choice of quarters;
the State Research Facility was a large building full of small
laboratories for rent. People came and went, and not one but a whole
army of super-heroines could easily live there for months. And there
was plenty equipment available, in case...
Meagen suddenly wondered. *In case what? What does Sailor Mintah do
when she's not looking after me? For that matter, who is she anyway?
*Is she another girl who can transform? No, a woman.* Meagen
corrected herself mentally. *She's older than me, more mature...
*Wait a minute, that's not the point. There's another Sailor Senshi
in New York. Does Iris know about it?
*Of course. That voice... It was Mintah all the time. She helped me
get there, I beat the Yeti thanks to her, and she got me out. But it
was Iris who contacted her.*
Meagen stopped. She was just a few blocks away from home, and she
couldn't just run in through the front door as Sailor Andromeda. She
scanned the street quickly. There was nobody around. She ducked into
a side alley just to make sure she was out of sight.
She pressed the round brooch on her front bow. In a short flash of
light, her costume disappeared and her hair shrunk back to a more
reasonable length. Iris had shown her the way to de-transform, as she
called it, that day a week ago when she destroyed her first Thinker.
It seemed like a year had passed since then.
Meagen went out of the alley and headed home. She thought about
Sailor Mintah again. *Why does she help me like this all the time?
And if Iris knows about her, why won't she tell me anything?*
But her questions were to be left unanswered for quite some time.
A few days later, Meagen was sitting at her desk and Iris was pacing
up and down the room. The cat was giving a lecture on when to attack
and when to retreat, but Meagen wasn't paying much attention. She
was looking at a small mirror thoughtfully.
"...and you should really know better than to attack an enemy you've
never met before. You never know what surprises they might have in
store for you. You see,...." the monologue didn't seem to be
heading in a definite direction.
"Iris," said Meagen slowly, "Sailor Andromeda wears earrings."
"...and the very... You're not paying attention, are you!" Iris was
so annoyed that she hardly noticed that Meagen used the third person
to talk about her alternate form. "Yes, the earrings are a part of
the Sailor Suit like any other. Now, as I was saying..."
"Iris," Meagen said a bit louder and in a tone of voice that caused
Iris to stop short, "I can't wear earrings. I don't have holes in
my ears." She lifted up her hair and showed (in the mirror) that her
ears were, indeed, not pierced.
Then she turned to Iris: "And that long hair business. There's
something in all this you're not telling me, Iris, and I mean besides
that Sailor Mintah person. Who is she? Who is Sailor Andromeda?
And for that matter, Iris, who are you?"

Well, that's it for today. If you have C&C you know what to do. :)
