Okay, the Japanese schoolyear begins in early April. The first break in
"Golden Week", the first week of May. This is when everybody (people in 
school to people working) goes on a short holiday usually out-of-town.

School resumes after Golden Week until summer break, July and August.
School resumes in September until the end of the school year in late
March. The end of school break usually lasts only about a week.

Kids go to school from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm officially with any club activities
taking place from 3 pm onwards, Monday to Friday with school on alternate
Saturdays.

There is of course no school on National and on local holidays, I don't
know when those are someone else will have to help you.

Also, each class is a whole unit. Members of each homeroom stay together
for all classes in the same room all day with the exception of Phys. Ed.,
Home Ec., laboratory(chem and bio) and music (AFAIK). It is the teachers
who move around.

When entering school, immediately after the main entrance, each student
heads for his shoe locker where he/she removes his/her shoes for a pair
"inside" shoes. Usually a pair of white sneakers which are worn only in
class and in the halls in order to prevent the tracking of outside dirt
inside the school building. Students switch shoes again when leaving.
