I agree with you on the most part, but Akane?  There are so many fics with
have Akane as the person with 'the potential to become the bestest martial
artist in the universe, yessiree!' or 'Akane suddenly gets mega
super-powers, and kicks her competitor's ass', that it's almost become
cliche. 

True enough, I was thinking merely if it _had_ to be either Ranma or Akane it
would best be the latter.

My first choices would be either the elder Tendo sisters or the less
appriciated fiancees ("Welcome to my parlour Ranma-sama, OHOHOHOHOHOHO!!!),
with the various sidekicks or cannonfodder running a close second.

If you really want to play up the new character who gets super powers, how
about someone like Gosunkugi?

Cuter (especially if the upper-tier womenfolk seem the obvious suspects to
those that want SpiderGirl squashed).
