A while back I was reading this fascinating fanfic called "Pencils" I
believe it was. But for some reason it has disappeared.

No, it hasn't. It's just not in any form suitable for public posting at the
present time.

My question is if the author of this fic reads this, let me know wheter
or not this is in the dead fic zone or if I'm just missing something.

Authors, plural. It's a multi-author project. And it is not in the dead fic
zone...it's just dragging along very slowly. And due to various
circumstances beyond our control, extensive edits are going to have to be
made to the first few chapters, and frankly, I just haven't gotten around
to it.

But no, Pencils is not dead. Just don't expect to see anything more of it
until much later in the summer.
