Its tragic love, pure and (hardly) simple.  Dr. Akagi Sr. (never can remember
her name) loved him, for one reason or another.  Possibly for the same reasons
Yui did, possibly a side effect of the
"if-he's-married-he-must-be-worth-something" thing that seems to crop up. 
Maybe as you suspect he had some redeeming qualities back then.  Whatever. 
I'm not sure how much she knew about him.  She loves him, even knowing that he
can't get over Yui (with no small amount of guilt i believe for wishing her
dead).  But she can't take it when she thinks he despises her.

The real tragedy though is Ritsuko, who knew exactly what kind of bastard he
was, knew he was an adulterer among other things, knew he was just using her,
knew what he had done to her mother - _but she loved him anyway_.  Asking why
is as futile as asking a woman why she still loves the man who beats her
nightly.  Ritsuko loved Gendou; and as a result she also hated him, hated Rei,
and most of all hated herself for loving him.  

just my $.02, but i think its reasonable and supportable from the series.
