"When Paths Merge"

Chapter 1: Attack / A sense of loss

	Asuka was not happy.  This was due to the fact that an angel that had
spiked
clubs for hands was driving the head of evangelion Unit-02 into the ground.
It wasn't the pain that was getting to
Asuka, although that was bad enough, it was the fact that this angel had
defeated both Rei and Shinji and she was
mankind's last hope.

"Stupid Shinji" she thought.

	If only he had been the last one left he would have found a way to defeat
the angel.
She felt anger rise up and surge through her body.  This angel was going to
take away everybody she knew and there was
nothing she could do about it.

	"Useless Eva" she screams.

	The Eva went silent and Asuka was plunged into darkness.

	"Now what?" asks Asuka.
	Asuka was greeted by silence.  After what seemed like several hours Asuka
was starting to get really annoyed.
The darkness seemed to close in around her, pressing tighter and tighter.
Asuka began to feel very afraid.

	'What if this third impact has occured?' she thought. 'And I was trapped in
the Eva?
I could be stuck here forever.'

	These thoughts went round and round in the second child's head. She became
increasingly more frightened
until she was on the brink of pure terror.

	'Why I am so afraid?' she screamed.

	It was then Asuka realised that it was because she might be alone forever.
For the first time in her life she
admitted to herself that she might need other people.

	Misato was also not happy.  Not only had Unit-00 and Unit-01 been defeated,
but the latest angel was in
the process of smashing Unit-02's head into the earth.

	Maya interrupted the major's thoughts. "I am losing all readings on the
pilot".

	"Get her the hell out of there" orders Misato.

	"It's not responding, I can't eject the entry plug," cries Hyuuga.

	"One more hit like that is going to destroy the Eva," warns Shigeru.

	The angel's club arced through air whistling towards the Eva.  To
everybody's surprise Unit-02's hand
intercepted the angel's club.  Unit-02 tightened its grip on the club,
wrenching from the angel and
effectively pulling the angels arm out of its socket.  Unit 02 then
proceeded to use the club to turn the
angel into a thick lumpy red goop.

	"How the hell did the Eva do that?" queried Misato.

	"I've got readings on the pilot" said Maya excitedly, however her face
quickly turned to one of dismay.

	Misato notices "What is it?" Misato askes, her face revealing that she knew
wouldn't like the answer.

	"Asuka has a sync ration of 400%." Maya says quietly.

	Misato begins "That means that she and the Eva have..."

	Maya confirms it "I am afraid she has been taken into the Eva."

	"Send recovery teams to all the Evas" instructs Misato as she leaves the
room.

	Ritsuko typed the last of a series of commands into the keyboard. The
computer displayed
the text [Recovery Process Started].  A large amount of numbers began to
scroll up the screen.
Ritsuko watched the numbers intently. Her eyes suddenly grew wide.  Seconds
later an alarm went off.

	"What happened?" questioned Maya.

	"The recovery process is stalled" replied Ritsuko

	"The entry plug is ejecting" cried Maya

	"Damn.  The process is incomplete.  She could be deformed." cursed Ritsuko.

	"The computer shows no deformities" assured Maya.

	"Check her vitals" asked Ritsuko.

	"Her psychograph isn't responding. She has lapsed into a coma" Maya said

	"Get her to the infirmary" groaned Ritsuko rubbing her temples.

	'This isn't what I want,' thought Ristuko.  One Eva down, as Rei 's Eva had
been totally devastated,
and now one pilot down. At least until she (Asuka) woke up.

	Shinji Ikari was thinking about the latest angel attack.  If only he had
been able to defeat
the angel then Asuka would be not be stuck in the damn Eva.  But if he had
defeated the angel Asuka
would have been angry with him.  He didn't know which was worse.

'She will come back' Shinji thought, 'even if it is only to gloat.'

	His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.  Slowly he got up and
answered the door.
Rei Ayanami was standing there dressed in her school uniform.

	Shinji greeted the girl, "Ayanami".

	Rei returned his greeting "Ikari. I am to stay with Major Katsuragi until
repairs are completed on
my apartment" explained Rei.  Shinji smiled and waved the girl in.  Rei
walked past Shinji and into the apartment.
"Were is Major Katsuragi?" asked Rei.

	"Misato went to see Kaji.  She should be back soon though" replied Shinji.

	"I see" stated Rei flatly.  A few minutes passed in silence and Shinji
began to grow uncomfortable.

	"Would you like some tea Ayanami?" asked Shinji hesitantly to break the
silence.  Rei did not reply.  "I'll just to my room then." Said Shinji
quickly.  With that he got up and headed
for the sanctuary of his room and SDAT.

"Why did he offer me tea?" Thought Rei.

	The phone at Misato's apartment rang out inwhat was considered by some to
be the early hours the morning.
9am to be exact, but since it was Saturday and there were no tests scheduled
it was considered to be early.
The phone's ring was designed to penetrate even the soundest sleepers mind.
Misato awoke.
Normally this wouldn't be so bad but last night Kaji had insited they go
out.  The ringing of the phone coupled
with the pounding in Misato's head put her in a bad mood.  Misato managed to
reach the phone before it stopped ringing.

	"Hello" Misato yawned.

	"Hello" replied Ritsuko gravely.

	"What's the matter?" enquired Misato now half awake.

	"It's about the second child."  Continued Ritsuko.

	"Is she ok? I mean you got her out of the Eva, right?" Misato asked.

	"She is in a coma.  One she will not wake up from" answered Ritsuko
steadily.

	"Why won't she wake up?" hissed Misato menacingly.
"It had better not have anything to do with him," stated Misato.

	"No, the commander had nothing to do with this.  The reason is Asuka's
psychograph shows no reading. Her body is alive but her mind is dead,"
explained
Ritsuko.

	Misato didn't even bother to say goodbye before hanging the phone up.  The
look on her face was a
combination of shock and horror.

	"What was that about?" enquired a voice from behind Misato. It was
Shinji's. Misato turned and
Shinji saw the look on her face.

	Not another angel attack?" asked Shinji in a tensed voice.

	Misato shook her head sadly "It's about Asuka."  Shinji's face clearly
fell, and he looked at the ground.

	Still looking at the ground Shinji asked in a small voice "Will she be all
right?"

	Misato looked pained.  "Doctor Akagi says her mind is dead.  They don't
think she will wake up from the coma."  Shinji turned to hide his face from
Misato.

	"I going back to bed," he managed to say before returning quickly to his
room.

Shinji had his face buried in his pillow.

"Why?" he thought.  "Why did she have to?  Damn my father. Damn NERV.  It
isn't fair"

	Rei was watching Shinji through the slit of the nearly closed door.  He had
his face buried in his pillow.
Rei didn't like it.

"This is uncomfortable," thought Rei.  "I do not wish to see him unhappy"

	Rei decided to talk to him.

	"Ikari" she called to him.  Shinji looked up from his pillow.  His eyes
were red from crying.

	"Ayanami.  What is it? Is there another attack?"  Asked Shinji, now
distracted from thoughts about Asuka.

	"Why are you crying?"  Queried Rei.

	"Uh um it's Asuka.  She isn't going to wake from her coma," replied a
surprised Shinji.

	"I see," said Rei.

	"Why did you ask?" inquired a somewhat curious Shinji.

	Rei looked at the ground and confessed, "I do not wish to see you unhappy."

	Shinji's eyes widened and then he managed a weak smile. "Thank you, Rei,"
he said quietly.

	Rei looked slightly startled.  Then replied "It is ok" pausing slightly
before adding "Shinji."
Rei looked at Shinji and said, "It is agreeable we could talk"

	Shinji agreed, "It is good to talk to somebody"

	"He called me Rei," she thought.  "Does he care for me?"

	The next morning Shinji awoke feeling like his old self.  Then he
remembered Asuka.

	"Why can't I just forget about her?" thought Shinji.

		He quickly regretted thinking it however because guilt was added the
already large pile of
negative emotions he was feeling.  Shinji made his way to the kitchen and
started make breakfast.

	Misato stumbled into the room.  "Morning Shinji" she said as she reached
for a beer.  She swallowed the
beer just as quickly as normal but lacking her morning gusto.  "It's not
your turn to make breakfast," Misato stated.

	"I just felt like it" said Shinji placidly.  "Were is Rei?" asked Shinji.

	"She went to have a compatibility test with unit 02" Misato stated evenly.

	"What? Already" cried Shinji.  "They have no respect," said Shinji sadly.

	"Unit 00 still isn't repaired.  If an angel attacks, we need all the pilots
we can get."  Misato explained.

	"I really miss her Misato.  I even miss her calling me baka," said Shinji
dejectedly.

	"I know.  I miss her too Shinji" consoled Misato.  They sat in silence
while they ate breakfast.
Misato got up to leave.  "I have to go now.  If you need anything  just
call." Misato called as she left.

	"Shinji is taking this really hard.  I need too cheer him up." Misato
thought.

	Shinji sighed as he started to clean up.  It just wasn't the same without
Asuka.
