How The Mighty Have Fallen
An Escaflowne spamfic
by Bridget Wilde
What could she say? Of course she was disappointed. Any woman
would be. Hitomi sat beside her husband of twenty years and stared
out at the sunset, wanting nothing more than to comfort him, but
knowing that anything she could say would only make the wound deeper.
In the end, though, she had to say something.
"It's not the end of the world, you know."
Van shrugged in a way that said that it very well might be.
"I don't mind."
"I do." Van's voice was harsh with bitterness at the betrayal of
his own body. "I feel like I've let you down."
"No!" Hitomi slipped an arm around his stiff shoulder. "You
haven't let me down."
"But I just won't be able to take you to the heights the way I
used to." He refused to relax, watching clouds waft across the sky
with narrowed eyes.
Time for another tack, Hitomi decided. "Look, I can go back to
Earth for a little while. Modern technology has made some amazing
advances..."
"I shouldn't need any help!" Van clenched his hands on the
windowsill. "I bet Folken never had this problem."
Hitomi sighed. "Folken died in his twenties. Of course he never
had to deal with it. But if he were alive today, I bet he'd have gone
through just what you're going through now."
"Maybe."
Hitomi slipped between Van and the window, the sill hard against
her legs. "Look, nothing is going to change how I love you. We'll
get through this somehow."
"But it's so humiliating!" Van's face was averted, his jaw set.
She traced his cheekbone gently with her fingertips.
"It's perfectly natural. Especially at your age."
There was a moment more of pained silence before Van relaxed,
slipping his arms gently around her. "It just makes me feel so old."
"You're not old." Hitomi returned his embrace gratefully, then
leaned back to gaze teasingly into his eyes. "We should have been
expecting this to happen, what with the way you molt and all."
Van turned his head to ruefully regard his sparsely-feathered
wings, even now dripping feathers like tears. "I guess so. I just
never thought I'd have to worry about going *bald*!"
