A little Idea I got after watching Revolutionary Girl Utena for the first
time. So, without further ado.
Shadowplay
A Revolutionary Girl Utena Shortfic
By Bill Morse
In an abandoned hallway, in a far corner of the academy, the light of the
noon sun shone brightly through a window onto the wall; two shadows appeared
and took the form of schoolgirls. Both looked at each other.
"Have you heard?" One asked, pointing at the other.
"Heard what?" The other shadow responded, pointing back.
"The Janitor! He's going to fix the pipe!" The first shadow said gleefully.
"The leaky one in the girl's locker room?" The second shadow said, putting
her hand on her chest.
"The very one!" The first said, waving her arms, overwhelmed with
excitement.
"Hooray!" The second shouted, and began to do jumping jack. "It's been so
long." She said.
"We thought he'd never get to it." The first said, also doing jumping jacks.
"And now he has the time! But is it too late? There could be rust." The
second said, putting her hand to her lips, looking very concerned.
"In that case he'll have to replace it, " The first said. Her arms were
crossed and she tapped her foot impatiently as if it had been a very obvious
question.
"But how?" The second asked, waving her arms frantically.
"I hear that crescent wrenches are all the rage!" The first said. She now
appeared to be dressed as a caricature of a plumber in extremely baggy
overalls. She waved the silhouette of a huge monkey wrench around for
emphasis."
"You think?" The second shadow asked excitedly, waiting on the first's every
word.
"I do."
"Hooray! No more mess!"
"No more noise!"
The two shadows hugged each other, jumping up and down. As the light faded
so did they.

The next day, at the same time, the shadows reappeared. "Have you heard? The
second shadow asked.
"Heard what?" the first asked, waiting with baited breath.
"The teachers. They're changing the curriculum!"
"Really? It's been so long!"
"The old one was so stale!"
"What do you think they'll add?"
"What do you think they'll drop?"
"Well, Twain is so controversial." The first shadow said sitting on the
silhouette of a raft as she fished.
"And calculus is too hard!" The second said, scratching her head, in front
of a shadow blackboard.
"Maybe they'll have more Shakespeare." The first shadow said, adjusting the
tight collar of her very tight renaissance outfit as she studied a skull.
"Or Tales of the Genji!" The second said, fanning herself, in her very
traditional kimono.
"Or sports! I want to keep my figure!" The first shadow said, striking a
pose.
"What will it be? What will it be? They exclaimed together. They grasped
each other's hands and danced as they faded away.

The shadows did not seem particularly energetic, when they appeared for the
third time. They just stood there, hanging around. The second shadow
scratched her head. The first one just sighed,
"Do you think it could rain today?" The second asked quietly as she opened
an umbrella.
The first shadow shook her head.
The second shadow shrugged and paced as far as the light from the window
would allow. She stopped and snapped her fingers as an idea took hold.
"Say. How do you think the boys basket ball team will do this season?" she
asked, pointing at the first shadow.
"Don't go there," grumbled the first shadow.
Both shadows sighed. They leaned against each other, back to back, and sat
down. They faded away again as the noon sun subsided. It was just no use.
There was nothing to talk about during spring break.
Well hope you tolerated it. C+C is welcome and appreciated. Oh, almost
slipped my mind. None of this stuff belongs to me so please don't sue.
