I know that feeling; it's weird to meet people in real life you've known

With forty plus people, this wouldn't work very well, I think.  Given an
hour long panel, unless you have multiple conversations going on at once,
that means any given person only gets one minute to speak.

Now, having a 'Meet Fanfic Authors' party might work well, but trying to
just draw everyone up into one big circle simply isn't practical if very
many people show up.
