Honestly, is there something obvious in the manga or anime that leads to
this?  Or is it just in the sick and depraved minds of fanboys and girls
everywhere?

Oh yeah, you spelled Chibi-usa wrong. ^_-

Same thing it is with Rei/Usagi and Spock/Kirk.  They're especially
close friends and thus natural candidates for slash.  Besides, I've
seen the Chibi-Usa/Hotaru hentai pic.  Some might find it inspirational.  

Oh, I believe I posted the essentially the same response to the FFML
twice.  Would you all please forgive me and say nothing about my foolish
