Good point, that.  Very good point.  However, Willmore's a
member of this list, and he's easily available to reach,

Well, just to add my two cents in here... one of my stories last year
(Destiny of the Shadows) had a couple references to Ranma 2096 in it. I
did e-mail him about permission, but he never replied. So, 'easily
available' is relative at times... e-mail isn't perfect... it gets lost
in the tide of other e-mail sometimes... people take vacations... etc...
(of course, I was pretty new to the fanfic world back then, so he could
have just said 'screw this...' and tossed it ;)

In the end I had to leave the references in my story because they fit so
well in the context. I gave him credit, of course. Now I never used his
original characters or even wrote scenes with his version of
Ranma/Akane/etc... in them... just some references from the main
characters who were fooling around with alternate dimensions during a bet
(no, it wasn't part of "The Bet").

But it's really between Pete and Chris if they want to make an issue of
it. I mean... we're all borrowing Ranma, Eva, Etc... characters as well.

Of course, it's good form to ask permission if you're going to use a
original character. I'd personally never use an original character
without asking the fanfic author and receiving direct permission, but to
each his own conscience.
