Honestly, is there something obvious in the manga or anime that leads to
this? Or is it just in the sick and depraved minds of fanboys and girls
everywhere?

Yes, there is a single scene in the manga. Specifically, what
happens is that Usagi gets annoyed watching Chibi-Usa and Hotaru skip off
to school together *holding* *hands*, and tells them to cut it out.
Chibi-Usa, the little smartass, turns around and says, "Why, don't you
like it when Mamoru holds your hand?" sending Usagi into confusion. On
the other hand, the first bit is in the arc where the damn horse-thingy
appears, so Takeuchi-sensei may just have done a little too much of her
substance of choice when she was writing that scene.

However, there is also the interplay between the two of them when
Usagi meets Hotaru for the first time in the manga. Usagi, the little
smartass (where did you think Chibi got it?) had been hoping to meet and
tease Chibi-Usa mercilessly about her "new friend" (read boyfriend) and
reacts to seeing Hotaru by saying, "A girl?" in shocked tones. Chibi-Usa
slyly replys, "Did I *say* it was a boy?"

Of such trivia are legends made.
