Author's Notes [Part One]:

Well, I'd been thinking about this fic and trying to get a coherent plot
out of it for about six months before I started writing it. And now I've
finally gotten the first chapter done. Let me tell you that it was Not
Easy [TM]

For the record, let me say that I've now seen the "infamous two" episodes,
and I LIKED them (although knowing the spoilers beforehand was probably a
major factor in this). I actually saw End of Eva (which I had also known
spoilers for) at Melbourne Anime Society on the afternoon of March 27, and
then the final episodes that night.

The Eva elements of this fic are heavier than the Iczer elements.
Hopefully I've managed to balance this out a bit by mainly using Nagisa's
POV.

I will be using *some* elements of Shinji's reality from TV episode 26 in
this fic. However, the story does not take place in either that reality or
the standard Eva continuity. (It's my fic, so I can do what I want with it.
 Bii-da!)

Finally, there won't be a huge amount of action or weirdness early on in
this fic. I'm saving most of it for the later chapters.

P.S. Unless otherwise specified, when the name "Nagisa" is used it will
refer to Kano Nagisa. Nagisa Kaworu will normally be referred to as Kaworu.

As always, any and all C&C NEEDED, MSTs especially welcome.

Neon Genesis Evangelion created by Hideaki Anno and GAINAX. Translated

	Her body - hers no more. Her mind - desperate.

	{Forgive me, Iczer-One.  I can't stop!  I can't control myself any longer!
 So please... shoot me!  Kill me!}

	Her enemy - the one who caused this.

	"Interesting ... *can* you shoot her, Iczer-One?"

	Her friend. No, more. Far more.

	"Nagisa, forgive me, but I just can't fire, I just can't bring myself to
shoot you."

	Her planet.

	{Iczer-One! If you die, what will hapen to the Earth? Please fight,
Iczer-One, Please!}

	Her heart - burned through by an energy beam - the pain intense, but short.

	Kano Nagisa awoke in the hospital, her arm in a cast and a breathing mask
on her face.

OP: "Never Run Away" [End Theme from Fight! Iczer-One OVA 2]

*************************

	"No ... this is ... all wrong."

	"I'm sorry, Kano-san." the doctor said, her attempt to sound sympathetic
not helping Nagisa's emotional state at all. "There was nothing we could
do for them."

	"Mom ... Dad ..." Nagisa's mind flashed back to the speeding car heading
toward their vehicle, the impact, the shattering glass - and then
blackness, until she awoke in the hospital. Her parents, dead so suddenly,
leaving her alone. It was just ... so *unfair*.
	"Miss Kano," The doctor's voice interrupted her thoughts again. "I think
the best thing now would be for you to try and relax."

	"No ... no, thank you." Nagisa said, the softness of her voice not
concealing her agitation and distress. "What happened to"

	"The other driver sustained minor injuries, and was released from hospital
five days ago." The doctor answered her question before she had asked it.
"He left only the contact details he was legally required to. Would you
like to see them?"

	"No." Nagisa responded weakly. "Not now."

	"There's something else you should know." The doctor continued. "The only
living relatives of yours we were able to contact said they were unable to
take you in. However, one of your mother's friends has volunteered to
adopt you." She handed some papers to Nagisa, who held them close to her
eyes and read the name.

         	"Katsuragi Misato..." So, that woman was to be her adoptive
mother. Because she was a friend of her mother's, Nagisa had wanted to
like her, but she had found it difficult. In the past, it was because
whenever she visited her mother, she talked constantly, as if she was
afraid of silence - a concept that disturbed Nagisa. Silence helped her
relax, and with Misato around the peace of silence was could not exist.
Worse, Misato's conversation tended to be herself. She could not believe
that the woman could talk about herself for so long and not reveal anything
interesting. Nagisa sometimes thought that if she tore Misato's skin off
there would be nothing underneath.

	Recently, though, her original reason for disliking Misato had been
supplanted by a second one - the woman smelled of alcohol. She knew that
most people her age drank the stuff, probably feeling more adult because of
it, but the was not among them. She could occasionally withstand the
stench, but the bitter taste *always* made her want to vomit. Even when
she had only drunk a mouthful. And it was even worse now - she was sure
the driver of that car had been drunk...

	It was not until she heard the doctor leaving her ward, and the lights
flickered before plunging her into a starless night, that she fully
realised what had happened - a realisation that felt like a concrete block
in her mind.

	/ What happened? /

	{My parents are dead.}

	/ What else? /

	{The man who killed them doesn't care what he's done. The only help he
gave was what he had to by law.}

	{My uncle didn't want to take me in.}

	/ So, who'll take care of me now? /

	{I'll be living with Misato... who's probably just doing it for her own
emotional comfort.}

	/ Not for my sake? /

	{No, she doesn't care about me.}

	{People don't care about other people.  Everybody's just out for themselves.}

	/ Everyone? /

	{Almost.  That probably includes me, too.}

	{It's the reason why people are always nasty to each other. They only
want what benefits them?}

	/ What can I do? /

	{Nothing.}

	{Perhaps the best thing to happen to humanity would be to die.}

	{There's nothing I can do...}

	{...nothing...}

	{...nothing...}

	"Jesus Christ, Shinji! *You* - *are* - HOPELESS!! We're meant to be in
class doing the morning cleanup *right now*, and you're still in your
pajamas! I thought that maybe just this once you'd be able to get up early
and keep us both out of trouble, but ***NO***!!! YOU had to..." Shinji
rushed to get dressed while Asuka continued her assault on his ears, then
in a single motion grabbled his bag, slid down the bannister and stuffed a
rice ball into his mouth. His mother waved to Asuka as she followed Shinji
out the front door.

	"Faster, baka! I hope I don't have to remind you what the punishment is
for not getting the classroom properly clean!"

	"You don't! Morning detentions twice a week for the rest of term! You
wanna race?"

	"*You* race me, the school record-holder for the hundred-meter dash?
You're on!"

	Within five minutes, the pair were in the classroom, Asuka beginning to
sweep the floor while Shinji leaned against the door, sweating and trying
to catch his breath.

	"Shinji, get to work! I hope you're not planning on making me do
everything myself!"

	"Okay, Asuka." Shinji jetted out one last puff of exhaustion before
picking up a broom. "Hey, aren't there supposed to be more trasfer
students coming today?"

	"Yeah, two of them! Now start cleaning!"

*	*	*	*	*

	"Today, we welcome two new exchange students to our class." the teacher, a
tall, middle-aged man whose hairline was beginning to recede, said, then
turned to the pair. "Please introduce yourselves."

	"Hi, I'm Kano Nagisa. I've transferred here because I... uh, I just moved
house. Pleased to meat you." She then waited a few seconds, until the boy
next to her began to speak - sounding to her as if he was far more
confident than she.

	"My name is Nagisa Kaworu. I have been living overseas for the past few
years, and have recently returned. I hope that I shall become friendly
with you."

	"Kano-san, Nagisa-san, your seats are the two on the right-hand side of
the third row." The pair took their places in the seats in front of Shinji
and Asuka. As soon as they sat down, Kaworu turned to the green-haired girl.

	"Your name's Kano Nagisa... is the 'ka' kanji in your name the one meaning
'to add, to join, to merge'?"

	"That's right... why?"

	"For some reason I just wanted to know... I'm not really sure why." He
turned away and mused to himself. "Kano Nagisa, 'Seashore of the
merging'." Nagisa looked - almost stared - at him, until a hand touched
her shoulder.

	"Welcome to our school, Nagisa! I'm Sohryuu Asuka Langley. I'll show you
around today. I hope we can be good friends."

	"Yes... so do I." Asuka seemed to be trying to be nice... so far.

*	*	*	*	*

	"It should have occurred by now."

	"Indeed, it should have. These happenings - or, rather, non-happenings -
are, to say the least, disturbing."

	"Most curious. The Second Impact happened as expected. However, almost
nothing else described in the Dead Sea Scrolls has eventuated."

	"And we still have no idea why not?"

	"The current hypothesis is that there was some kind of major disturbance
to the scenario. However, we have no idea what that disturbance may have
been."

	"What steps do you reccomend be taken to rectify this?"

	"What steps *can* be taken? All we can do now is attempt to discover why
the events have not happened - something we are not likely to find out -
and make preparations."

*	*	*	*	*

	"Hey, Nagisa! What'cha doing?" Asuka's voice sounded out, as Nagisa sat
with her back against a tree, having just taken her lunck out of her bag.

	"Just about to eat my lunch."

	"Mind if I join you?" Asuka asked, sitting down beside her without waiting
for an answer. "What's on your mind?"

	"A lot of things. But at the moment, I'm curious who that girl is." She
indicated a student with neck-length, blue-grey hair. "I noticed her in
class, she seems kinda... uh, different from other people. Except maybe
Kaworu-san."

	"Oh, Ayanami Rei? Yeah, she's different. She's the 'Miss Mystery' of the
school, she hardly talks to anyone. I've tried, but she brushes me off."

	"I get the feeling she... kind of doesn't want people to know." Nagisa
said, her gaze remaining focused on Rei for a few moments before she turned
back to Asuka.

	"Well, that's a bit obvious! Anyway, what I wanted to talk to you about
is this - since you're new, why don't you come around tonight and watch
some videos with me and Shinji?"

	"What, to your house?"

	"Actually, it's gonna be at Shinji's. His dad's on a business trip to
Germany at the moment, and his mom won't mind. Here's the address!" Asuka
stuffed a piece of paper into Nagisa's shirt pocket. "You'll come, won't
you?"

	{It'll be a chance to get away from Misato for a while.} Nagisa thought.
Her adoptive mother was not as bad a parent as she had feared, but she
still didn't like her - the attention she gave her was largely superficial,
and she doubted Misato would be able to help her with any of her real
concerns. Besides, the smell of alchol in the place was difficult to
tolerate. "Thanks, Asuka. I'll be there."

	"Hire something you like from the video store, okay?"

*	*	*	*	*

	Asuka and Nagisa sat back on the couch in Shinji's living room. Shinji
lay on the carpet, as did Touji and Kensuke. On a chair beside Nagisa sat
another boy whom Shinji had invited - Nagisa Kaworu. The ending credits of
Asuka's DVD began to roll, and she instantly pulled it out and placed it
back in the box.

	"Shinji, I hope you liked that one! It's one of my favourites!" The
redhead proclaimed, grinning.

	"Well, it's just that..." Shinji began, only to be cut off by Asuka

	"Are you saying that 'Top O Nerae! Gunbuster' isn't any good?"

	"NO! It's just that... I can't stand Hideaki Anno, that's all."

	"WHAT? How dare you say that?" For the next minute and a half, Shinji
took the brunt of one of Asuka's verbal barrages. When it was over, Asuka
turned to Nagisa.

	"Okay, it's your turn now! What did you pick out?" Nagisa showed the
cover to Asuka.

	The color drained from Asuka's face, and she let out a scream of
half-rage, half-terror.

	" 'Vampire Apocalypse'!? You mean you actually like those gory, violent
horror movies?"

	"I love them."

	"What? You're sick! The only people who like those things are twisted
psychos, right, Shinji?"

	"Uh, actually, I sometimes enjoy them."

	"AARRRRGGGHHH!!!!  BAKA SHINJI!  BAKA!  BAKA!!!!"

	Shinji placed the DVD in the player. Before the movie was one-third
through, Asuka had rushed out of the room to vomit.

*	*	*	*	*

	The video sreenings went on until late at night, and the group unanimously
agreed to sleep at Shinji's house. Kaworu had drifted into slumber
instantly, while Nagisa lay awake next to him. The grey-haired boy had
deen interested yet detatched at the group's get-together, watching the
videos, her, and the others intently, but not taking part in the conversation.

	He had gone to the pain of analysing her name's meaning... why?

	Why was she curious about his motivations?

	Nagisa rolled over, struggling to get to sleep.

*	*	*	*	*

	She was insubstantial, floating, able only to observe as the giant purple
hand grabbed Kaworu. Kaworu smiled, and his mouth moved, but no sound
reached her ears. The machine which held him somehow felt familiar to her,
as well.

	Shinji?

	Yes, but...

	But someone else familiar to her as well.

	Someone familiar, but whose name and face she did not know.

	The machine's fist clenched around Kaworu's body, and his head fell into a
lake of orange liquid.

	Then, Nagisa Kano's dream ended.

	Geez, every chapter of every story I write seems more exhausting than the
last!

	Firstly, no, I *don't* hate Misato. I just engineered Nagisa's opinion of
her to cause her a little more stress.

	Nagisa's attitude possibly seems a bit inconsistent, especially given her
little bit of self-examination early on. But she's disturbed, stressed-out
and confused, which tends not to lend itself well to consistency (I would
know ^_^). Perhaps I should have done more to emphasise this? I'll
probably need help in that regard.

	I got the idea of Nagisa waking up in hospital from the opening scene of
Brian Caswell's _Merryl of the Stones_, a book I have owned since I was
about twelve and have probably reread more times than any other book. It's
possible that a character from there will be showing up in some of the
Lightsphere Universe fics.

	Oh, and yes, I'm *still* in that sticky patch with Operation Lightsphere.
Please tell me if you have any ideas.

	Thanks for reading!
