Everyone seems to think that Eva was derived from the name Evangelion. Perhaps
it's true, but also perhaps it was just EVA. If I remember correctly, EVAs
were some sort of spacecraft thingie. God, I wished I payed more attention in
ROTC. Anyway, from memory, it's either a suit or that little pod thing that
falls out of the sky, like the on in the intro to Bewitched, (that old TV
Series, not the group)
I think your refering to Extra Vehicular Activity Suits. They are the protective
space suits that are used that astronauts wear when they go on spacewalks. This
is an interesting theory, but I doubt that that is the case with the Evas, since
Anno and several others invovled with Project E have stated that Eva was used only
as a short of the full name of the units (Synthetic Humanoid Fighter; Evangelion.)

I can't tell what's inside anymore,
It could be I'm alright, like before...
Black or white,
I've lost my sight,
Can't tell what's inside anymore...
Ooh, what sleep is I know I'll never know,
And all my tears that seem to drench me,
Have faded into blue...
And I wait for the time I see in my mind,
Looking long and hard at what I might find,
And I awaken from my eternal dream
All that it might seem...
My humanity has died.
A poem written by the designated pilot
of Eva Unit-00 after her third
awakening...
