It's Japanese Biological Warfare Unit 731

Japanese in Unit 731 set free scores of thousands of
infected rats that caused widespread plague in 22
counties of Heilungchiang and Kirin provinces that took
more than 20,000 Chinese lives

Japanese Unit 731 used human beings for vivisection in
order to develop biological weapons

October 4, 1940, when Japanese airplane dropped plague
bacteria at Chuhsien in Chechiang province which caused
the deaths of 21 people. On the 29th of the same month,
Japanese airplane spread plague bacteria at Ningpo,
Chechiang which caused the deaths of 99 people. On
November 28 of the same year, Japanese airplanes
dropped a large quantity of germs at Chinhua but no
death was reported. In January 1941 Japan spread plague
germs in Suiyuan and Ninghsia provinces and again in
Shansi that caused serious epidemic outbreaks of plague
in these areas. 

Are you sure?  I thought that the area in question
was
pretty much in the extreme southwest of China.  Why
would
the Japanese Mad Scientists have been operating so
far out
in the boondocks where they would have been so
vulnerable?

operating. However I DO remember they were operating
out in the boondocks 
1)operational security
2) plenty of human subejcts for experimentation

And of course the Amazons wouldn't care
any more about the Rape of Nanking than the
firebombing of Dresden.  A lot of foreigners a long

way away > died.

##Not true. Nanking was in CHINA. There's a big
difference (unless you're talking about China being so
large) And I don't think that's true. I have a Chinese
clasmate who is got VERY upset with me when she saw a
book on learning Kanji on my desk. I have had several
experiences with other Chinese Students. And my sister
has been to China several times and reports the same
thing. The Chinese do NOT like the Japanese. (The
Koreans are even worse) And these are people who
weren't BORN during WWII. I think it is not
unreasonable to assume the mythic Amazons would share
this antipathy DURING the war period. It's not as if
the Japanese went out of there way to endear themselves
to any NON-Japanese during this period.

Which brings me to my beef with "A Refugee's Tale". 

Deserting from the Imperial Navy at the start of the
Pacific > War simply isn't on.  Nodoka would _not_

tolerate it.

also just have have sleazed his way out of military
service > entirely and have been one of those

Japanese > colonists in  > China.  
##Agree. Much better to arange transfer to China. Of
course THEN he's trapped in a country FULL of people
who want him, his wife, his child DEAD, skinned and
stuffed, Still a wonderful opportunity to practice
'Saotome Secret Technique. ^_^
Actually explaining how he/they survived is a story in
itself. ^_~
