One day, while reading a R1/2 fanfic, I
suddenly asked myself, "Who the heck came up with all
this honor stuff in Ranma fanfics?"
I looked up the word "honor" in
English-Japanese dictionary, and received the following
results that seemed appropriate:
meiyo/eiyo (like receiving an award)
menboku/taimen (a face or reputation)
eiyo/tokken (privilege)
dougishin/jisonshin (pride)
keii (respect)
Now the funny thing is, none of these words
are mentioned even once in the original manga. I
checked all volumes from 1 to 38, and the term "honor"
just doesn't seem to apply anywhere. It seems like
Soun and Genma want the engagement only to strengthen
the Anything Goes School, and really won't be
humiliated or anything if it didn't work out. The
scenario of Ranma or Akane getting thrown out of the
family seems unlikely as well.
So now, I ask all of you FFML people; is the
concept of honor concerning the engagements just
a fanfic device that has gotten too popular? Or does
English version of Ranma 1/2 have a different details
than Japanese ones?
And before you say, yes, I'm aware that I need
a life. But I'm a hopeless otaku, so don't remind me.
