You know, after all of the Akane-bashing and Ukyou-bashing I've seen
going over the FFML in the last day or two, all in the name of 'fic
writing, I'm left with one question:
Do you really hate these creations of ink and pen so much?
For the record, I don't hate or even dislike either of those two
characters. The only Ranma 1/2 characters I dislike are the anime-only
ones, and I don't write about those.
That's ALL I'll say publically in response to this, in the interests of
not starting a spamwar. The list is supposed to be for discussions of
our fics, not our personalities. If anyone wants to discuss this
further, let's please take it off the list before it gets ugly.
Perhaps I might be able to keep it private if you were to refrain from
public insults, Gary. As you seem to be unable to afford such a
courtesy, this remains public. In my comments, I will usually try to
act obliquely at first. Since this has failed, it's time to get direct.
The bashing involved is a subtle one, one brought up in other posts. By
naming your work 'Justice', then showing the events in the story, you
are implying that Ukyou's final fate *is* justice, that somehow she
deserves the curse she is given in the story. Moreover, your showing of
Ukyou is totally one-sided; you don't show any of the compassion she is
capable of. All you show is her drive to get Ranma. After such things,
it is difficult *not* to view it as character bashing.
Arromdee's is bashing in a different way. He shows Akane as so
desperate to get rid of the chaos that has showered her life that she is
willing to foster those onto someone else. To his credit, he at least
shows some of Akane's other sides over the course of the story.
However, the one-sidedness of the opening, as well as the timing of it
(He mentioned that your work had been impetus for him to write it), left
me soured to it.
Now... as to why I find these so disgusting: You both prove something
Ryan Mathews said a long time ago correct. By writing such bashing
stories, you show them to be caricatures, two-dimensional cardboard
cutouts. To breathe life into these characters, you must focus on far
more than one side. And to do that, you have to let go of whatever
dislikes you have for a character, and try to see all sides of them.
No offense, but you are both veteran authors. You should know better
than what was done here.
