"A Close Call"
Renie went running down the street. "No one loves me, especially Serena. She hates me!" she sobbed. The child ran blindly across the street. A truck came rumbling down the street; she was so small he didn't see her until it was too late. He slammed on the brakes. "AHHHHH!" Renie shouted and her energy burst up into a column.
Serena looked out of her window. She gasped. "Oh no! I didn't even know she was gone!" Serena ran out of the house to where she had seen the column. Renie was lying on the ground, barely breathing. Serena gasped and began crying. The trucker had driven off. "Oh Renie what happened?" She picked up the small child up in her arms and began running.
"Darien, help! It's Renie, she's gonna die!" Serena cried.
Darien threw open the door. "What happened?" He took her pulse. "She's barely alive! We've got to get her to a hospital!"
They ran to the hospital, Serena still crying. The hospital staff took care of Renie immeadiately. Serena and Darien sat in the waiting room. With all the shock, Serena had forgotten that Darien had broken up with her, so she sat down next to him.
"Oh, Darien, I couldn't stand losing Renie," Serena yawned and put her head on his shoulder.
Because he knew the state of trauma she was in, he let her head stay there. "I know, she's very special to me too,"
While they were still waiting for news on Renie, Serena fell asleep. Darien looked over at her. "Serena, I'm sorry, but until I decipher that dream, we can't be together," he said softly.
After waiting until two AM a nurse came out. "Excuse me, are you waiting for the child Renie?"
"Yes. Is she okay?" Darien asked worriedly.
"She's still in critical condition but you may go see her if you like; she's in room 115," the nurse informed him.
"Serena," Darien woke her gently.
"I don't want to get up Mommy, I don't wanna go to school," Serena muttered half-asleep.
"Serena, we can go see Renie now," she stood up and streched.
They walked into Renie's room, and Serena gasped, "She looks so small," They walked over to the bed and Serena took her hand. "Oh Renie, who did this to you?" Serena sobbed
Renie's eyes flickered, nearly opening but she fell back into a deep slumber. As Serena continued to sob, Darien put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "She's very strong, I'm sure she'll be fine," he couldn't convince himself, yet he attempted to make Serena feel better. "Have you called your parents?"
"Hmm, no," was her reply as she stood up to go do so.
When she left the room he took Renie's hand and felt tears begin to form in his eyes. No matter how hard he tried, he could not hold them back. Serena trudged back in quietly; she stopped in the doorway and heard Darien softly sobbing. She continued around to the other side of Renie's bed and picked up her other hand.
As soon as he saw Serena coming back into the room, Darien made himself stop crying.
<If I'm crying, how can she believe that Renie will be okay?> He reached up and wiped the tears off of his face.
After five minutes of sitting in silence, Serena's parents arrived. Even in the darkness of the room, it was apparent that Mrs. Tsukino was crying. Darien moved out of the way so Serena's parents could come up next to the bed.
"What happened, Serena?" Mr. Tsukino asked.
"I don't know for sure. I noticed Renie was missing so I went out to find her. When I got to her, she was lying in the middle of the street, essentialy like this," Serena forced herself to cease her crying.
Just then Serena's Dad took notice of Darien but because of the situation he said nothing. Darien, realizing he was out of place, went back out to the waiting room.
Back in Renie's room: "Mom, Dad, you two look exausted. Why don't you guys go home? I'll stay with Renie and I'll let you know as soon as anything else happens," Serena, even though she had gotten a nap, was very tired. She hid it so well, her parents believed her and went home.
As they walked out of the room, Mr. Tsukino had his arm around his wife's shoulder, comforting her.
Once Darien saw them leave, he let Serena be alone with Renie for five minutes before he rentered the small room.
"Serena, if you would like to sleep some more I will stay with Renie," Darien said tenderly.
"Thank you," Serena went out ot the waiting room and immeadiately fell asleep.
Darien found a chair, pulled it up to the bed and sat down. The incessant beeping of the heart monitor, began to irk him. His head occasionally dropped, but each time he jolted back awake.
To keep himself awake, Darien went and got a cup of coffee. When he returned, Renie was talking and Darien couldn't tell from the door whether she was awake or asleep. He ran to the bedside, her eyes were closed, she was asleep.
"Mummy, wake up! Oh, it's all my fault, I was just looking at the crystal and it disappeared. I'm so sorry, please wake up!" the small child cried out in her sleep.
Darien took her hand, "It's okay. Don't worry," He knew she probably couldn't hear him but the words helped to comfort himself. He slowly sipped his coffee and watched through the window as the sun rose.
Serena walked into the room and saw Darien, sitting next to the bed, holding a cup of coffee in one hand and Renie's hand in the other. He stared thoughtfully out the window, attempting to understand what Renie had said.
"How is she?" Serena woke him from his trance.
"Well, the only time there was even a slight change was when she started to talk in her sleep, " Darien replied.
"What did she say?" Serena strolled over to the bed.
"She said something about the Silver Crystal disappearing," Darien summarized it quickly.
"You don't look so good. Maybe you should go home and sleep," Serena suggested.
"That sounds good, give me a call if there's any change," Darien got up and exited the room.
Serena took his place in the chair. She looked out at the nearly completely risen sun.
MEANWHILE:
Ami and Lita knocked on the door at Serena's house. It took a little while but Mrs. Tsukino eventually answered. She yawned, "Hi girls. Serena's not here, she's at the hospital with Renie,"
The girls gasped, "What happened?" Ami took hold of her thoughts.
"I'm not sure, Serena knows more than me. Why don't you go ask her?" her Mom yawned again.
"Thanks," Ami and Lita ran to the hospital. They went in the doors and stopped at the front desk. "We're looking for a little girl named Renie. What room is she in?" Ami asked very matter-of-factly.
"I can't release that information," the nurse replied.
"Tell us," Lita said in a threatening tone.
The nurse was afraid of her, "Room 115,"
As they got to the room they slowed to a walk. They entered and saw Serena sitting, next to the bed, holding Renie's hand. "Hi," Ami said softly.
Serena jumped slightly, "Oh, hi guys. What are you doing here?" Serena looked puzzled.
"We stopped at your house to be sure you weren't late for school and your Mom told us you two were here," Lita replied.
"What happened?" Ami questioned.
"Last night I saw a flash of Renie's energy. When I got to her, she was lying in the middle of a street. I took her to Darien's and then we came to the hospital. He stayed with her all night so I sent him home," Serena answered.
"Wow, poor Renie," Lita sympathized.
"We'll pick up you homework for you," Ami said very characteristically.
"Thanks guys, I'll see you later," Serena replied somewhat blankly.
"Hope she feels better," Lita and Ami left.
Serena sat serenly staring at the serene scene below.
Suddenly she realized she was famished, she hadn't eaten abything since last night and it was nearly noon. <She'll ve okay for five minutes.> Serena thought as she left the room to get something to eat.
Serena walked down the hall towards the cafeteria. Luna jumped out from behind a plant and frightened Serena terribly. "Luna! You scared me! What are you doing here?"
"Hush, I heard Renie was in the hospital. How is she?" Luna answered.
"She's fine, I'm going to get something to eat," Serena continued walking towards the cafeteria. The two walked to the cafeteria and Serena bought herself some food. They walked somewhat slowly back to the room. As they walked into the room they saw Renie coughing up blood.
