This is what you get for giving me a mental image of a burning man.

(Stuff from _The Stars My Destination_ is from memory. I remember the
plot well, but the language only vaguely. Bear with me here..)

Gully Foyle was burning. He jaunted, and jaunted again. He saw himself
on the Spanish steps, in the depths of space, again and again. He was
everywhere, moving through both space and time.

"Water," he thought, "So hot...so much fire. I wish I had some water."

Then, like the first man to jaunt had done, he jaunted to something that
would put out the flames that were consuming him.

There was a splash, and coolness, and then he was gone again.

Saotome Ranma, struck by his father, now a panda, fell towards a pool.
He heard a splash, and felt the water cover him.

"Oh no! Customer fall in pool of drowned Bester-protagonist. Very tragic
story of spaceman who fall in one-thousand year ago, but not born yet!"

Ranma pulled himself out of the pool, his face covered in stylized
tattoos...

Now, for even more fun, consider that the Amazons are essentially
working towards a Colsodian, and the Musk towards a group of Kaleidons
(Is that spelled right?).
