Routinely. Mt. Fuji is a dormant volcano. Japan as an island groups is primarily volcanic. Since they are on the edge of one of the pacific tectonic plates, they experience multiple tremors monthly. Consider the Kobe earthquake a few years back. They're not that far from Tokyo, really.
