Chapter 2 -The trouble With Ariadne
===========================

Ryoga stood behind Kaye as Benji unlocked her front door with the
keys she wore on her necklace. As the door swung open, there was a
terrible scream and Benji was hit in the chest with a cannonball.
Which turned out to be her six - year old sister, Ariadne. Kaye held
her head and groaned in despair as Benji tried desperately to detach
 Ariadne.
"KAYE!!" yelled Ariadne, letting go of Benji and immediately attaching herself to Kaye's legs.
"Hello Ariadne." Said Kaye, smiling feebly and trying to pry Ariadne off of her legs.
Ariadne then noticed Ryoga, who blinked at her.
"Who's that?" she asked, staring at him.
"Uh - oh... um, this is Ryoga. He's from Japan ." answered Benji carefully.
"Um... hello." Murmured Ryoga, a little worried by the others' reaction to this child.
"Hello Ricecake!" cried Ariadne, grinning and attaching herself to his
legs, much to his embarassment. Benji and Kaye sighed.
"Uh... <what do I do now?>" he asked, blinking. He had no idea of how to deal
with over - affectionate six year old girls.
"You speak funny." Said Ariadne, looking up at him.
"Come on Addie, let's get inside." Said Benji wearily. Ariadne nodded, let go of Ryoga's legs and dashed
inside. Benji sighed and followed her.
"< I have to apologise in advance. She very annoying and I won't be here very long.>" said Kaye
to Ryoga, smiling apologetically before going inside herself.
*I don't like the sound of this... * thought Ryoga as he followed her
in. Inside, he saw that Benji had disappeared to some other room, and
Kaye had flopped down onto the sofa next to another girl, a bit
younger than Kaye but similar to her in looks, although she had darker
hair and no glasses. She was wearing black trousers and an orange and
blue fleecy top. He only had a few moments to take this in before
Ariadne attached herself to his legs again.
"RICECAKE!!!!" she yelled, grinning as Ryoga turned pink.
"Addie, his name is Ryoga." Sighed Kaye.
"Addie, wanna hug?" said the other girl, smiling.
"YEAH!!" cried Ariadne, letting go of Ryoga, running over and jumping
into her arms. Kaye sighed again.
"Anyone want some tea?" called Benji, poking her head out of a door some way down the room. Ryoga
guessed she must be in the kitchen.
"Yeah, sure.<Hey Ryoga, you want some tea?>" asked Kaye. The other girl blinked at her and Ariadne
 giggled.
"Um... sure ." repiled Ryoga, slipping off his backpack and
 sitting in an armchair.
"Ryoga will have some too!" called Kaye. The other girl nudged her, "Huh?"
"Who's that?" she asked Kaye in a whisper.
"That's Ryoga. He's from Japan, and he doesn't have any money, so Benji said he could stay with her ." answered Kaye.
 "Ricecake's staying here?" blinked Ariadne.
"Yes Addie, he is ." sighed Kaye.
"Well, introduce me then ." said the other girl.
"Okay, okay.< Hey Ryoga, this is my sister Liea .>" Kaye said,
 smiling.
"Um... hello Liea ." said Ryoga slowly, smiling too.
"Hi Ryoga. Guess you don't speak much English, huh?" grinned Liea. Ryoga
stared blankly at her and Kaye nodded affirmation.
"Yeah, he speaks funny ," said Ariadne. She jumped off Liea's lap and walked up to
Ryoga, "And he smells like fish ."
"Addie! Don't be rude!" said Benji crossly, putting the cups of tea on the table and frowning at
Ariadne, who just stuck out her tongue.
 "Huh?" asked Ryoga.
"Um..< Addie thinks you need a bath .>" said Kaye, who privately agreed -
not that it was his fault, since he had obviously been travelling a
lot. Benji turned to glare at her and Kaye got an inkling little
feeling in the back of her mind, which she pointedly ignored.
"< Charming ,>" laughed Ryoga, " but she's right. Would it be okay for
me to have a bath once I've finished my tea?>" he asked Benji. He
felt like having a nice, relaxing hot bath and getting good and
clean. There were several weeks worth of built - up grime all over
his clothes and body, and it was getting uncomfortable.
"< Sure ,>" replied Benji, "< The bathroom's down there, through the
green door .>" They sat and drank their cups of tea, half - watching the TV
whilst Ariadne played noisily with her toys. Once he'd finished his
tea, Ryoga put down the empty cup, got up, and proceeded to walk into
 the kitchen.
"Ryoga! <Why are you in the kitchen?>" asked Benji startledly as she walked in with the dirty cups.
"Um... <I got lost .>" murmured Ryoga, looking down at his feet. Benji stared at him.
"<How? I mean, do you have a bad sense of direction or what?>"
"<Well, more like... no sense of direction whatsoever .>" he mumbled,
turning pink. * Why can't I just lie and say... and say... well,
something!* he thought angrily - he hated people knowing about how
he continually got lost, because they teased him about it, and it
made him feel that he had a weakness. * Like they teased you about
turning into a pig, huh? Anyway, you know you can't lie to her... *
whispered that little voice smugly. * Oh shut up!* growled Ryoga
 mentally.
"<Really? Hang on ,>" Benji said, putting the cups in the
sink, "<Right, now follow me .>" she finished, walking out of the
kitchen with Ryoga in tow and pushing open a green door at a right
angle to the kitchen, "<Here's the bathroom. When you're finished -
and dressed - give me a yell and I'll show you the bedroom .>" Ryoga
nodded, blushing slightly, and walked back into the kitchen. Benji
groaned and went to get him back.

Ryoga felt his muscles relaxing and all the tension flowing out of
him in the warm water. It was a bit strange to be soaping and
shampooing in the bathtub, but he was used to this kind of thing,
thanks to getting lost in innumerable other countries. Plus, it meant
he didn't have to turn into a pig every time he had a bath. Just as
he was rinsing his hair for the last time, Ariadne burst in through
the door, screamed with hysterical laughter and ran out again. Ryoga
turned bright red, his arms frozen above his head.
"<Sorry Ryoga!>" yelled Benji, and he could hear her scolding Ariadne through the
door. Very slowly, he put down the tub he'd been using to wash his
hair, checked the position of the foam, felt his blush fading and
stepped out of the bath into a soft white towel. Once he'd dried off,
he tied his bandanna back on his forehead and changed into a pair of
black trousers bound at the bottom with cord, and a sleeveless yellow
tee-shirt. Then he called Benji. "Hey Ryoga ," she said, poking her
head round the door, "<I sorry about that. She a bit out of control.
Pick up bag and I show you room .>"
"<It's okay .>" murmured Ryoga, following Benji upstairs and into her room. Kaye was sat on a small
stool by a desk, and Liea was sitting on the top bunk of the bed,
which Benji jumped up onto as well, after gesturing for him to sit on
the bottom bunk, "<You sure have a lot of posters .>" he commented
as he sat down. This was an understatement on the scale of " Houston, we have a problem ." since Benji's walls were almost
completely covered with posters of film stars and manga characters.
So was her ceiling, her door and her wardrobe. In fact, there were
also some on her bed, so Ryoga was not surprised to hear the others
 giggle and smiled himself.
"<Say Ryoga, your arms are pretty muscular ,>" said Kaye carefully, "<Do you do martial arts?>"
"<Yeah I do .>" answered Ryoga, going slightly pink.
 "<What sort?>"
"<Well, I guess that it's Anything Goes Mrtial Arts .>" frowned
Ryoga. That was the Saotome school of fighting, but he didn't know
how else to describe his style.
"<I've never heard of that .>" blinked Kaye.
"<I'm not surprised, it's kind of unique to Nerima's area. Basially, you learn whatever type of martial arts suits you
best and try to learn as many different types of attack and defence
as possible, although most of the ones I know are attacks .>" Ryoga
 said thoughtfully.
"<What kind of attacks?>" asked Benji curiously. Liea settled down to read a comic, since she didn't know enough
Japanese to follow the conversation ( "gee, thanks"- L-Chan "well you
specialise in Tibetan and Chinese, right ?" - K-Chan "right..." -
 L-Chan )
"<Well, most of the ones I know are based on ki...>"
started Ryoga, and went on to describe the shishi hokodan, the
perfect shishi hokodan, the moko takabisha, the hiryuu shoten ha, the
hiryuu karin da and the bokusai tenketsu.
"<Hm, that breaking point technique doesn't use ki, does it?>" asked Kaye.
"<Well, actually it uses ki to 'see' the breaking point ,but it
doesn't work on people.>" shrugged Ryoga, * not that I knew
that when I was training... * he added to himself.
"<Hm.. ah! We gotta go or we'll miss the pizza guy!>" exclaimed Kaye, suddenly
noticing the time. Liea looked up and jumped off the bed. They said
goodbye to Benji and Ryoga, went downstairs and said goodbye to
Ariadne, and left the house. Ryoga looked out of the window to see if
he could see them going up the street, and noticed some dark figures
on the rooftops who started following Kaye and Liea as they walked up
the street. It was getting dark and they didn't seem to have noticed
 they were being followed.
"<Hey Benji, there are people following Kaye and Liea .>" he said worriedly.
"<Oh, are they out of the hospital?>"
 "Huh?" blinked Ryoga.
"<They always be followed by guys who try to beat up - but they beat up guys .>" said Benji
 simply.
"<Why do the guys try to beat them up?>"
"<Well, first they pick on Kaye because she smart and wear glasses, but when they
parents die things get worse. Nothing they can't handle though .>"
shrugged Benji. Ryoga looked out of the window again and watched the
last of the figures leaping a gap between two rooftops. Something
about that dark figure in particular sent a shiver down his spine.
"<I have a bad feeling about this .>" said Ryoga, and he ran
 downstairs and out the door.
"<Uh... Ryoga?" called Benji, "It's still raining...>" P - Chan squealed in reply.

Contrary to what Ryoga thought, Kaye had noticed the group of young
men following them, and she had especially noticed the disturbing
presence that had given Ryoga a bad feeling. This was why she was
waiting till they made their move, which they did in the cemetry. She
was glad Liea was with her as it was a large group and there was
 something strange about them.
"Hey Miller sisters!" called a voice from the darkness behind
them, "You ready to get beaten up but good?"
Kaye turned around and glared straight at the speaker, even
though Liea was sure she couldn't see him. "You ready to stop
hiding, Martin?" she spat. A boy in torn jeans, a black tee - shirt
and a black leather jacket obligingly stepped out from behind a large
tree. Several other similarly dressed boys also stepped out from
behind trees, bushes and tombstones. Kaye's eye was particularly
drawn to a figure, taller than the others, who stepped out but
remained cloaked in the shadows, "I see you brought some friends.
What makes you think that'll help you?"
"Ah, but you haven't met all my friends. I've made a very special new friend, and he's gonna help
us beat you once and for all ." grinned Martin. Kaye noticed a
slightly mad glint in his eye, and began to wonder if this was going
to be as straight forward as usual.
"So then, are ya gonna introduce me to this new friend of yours?" asked Kaye carefully. Martin's grin
widened, and the tall figure stepped from the shadows. Kaye and Liea
both gasped as they saw what the dark figure looked like. He was
dressed all in black, with black gloves and a long black trenchcoat
which swirled round his feet. The face was like a man's, but chalk
white and with an unreal quality to it. The hair was long and white,
and flowed silkily halfway down his back. His lips were thin and his
nose was long, narrow and pointed. His eyes were as red as blood and
as black and cold as the void of space, "Nice friend ." said Kaye,
 gulping.
"I'm glad you think so ," hissed the creature in a voice as
cold as stone, "I would hate to think you disliked me for some
 reason, Kaye ."
"Well, it seems you know me, so care to introduce yourself?"
"Oh, of course. How discourteous of me," he said, an arrogant leer twisting his lips, " I am the demon Nartoth, and I have
made a little deal with these young men. I shall give them the means
to defeat you in combat, and in return I shall take their eternal
souls." He hissed the last words ferally, and Kaye caught a glimpse
 of two pointed fangs.
"Well, it seems Martin the Moron has struck again!" groaned Kaye, " I mean, just how stupid and arrogant are you
 lot?"
 "Very ." murmured Liea.
"Ha! I'm not the one who's gonna get the crap kicked outta me!" snarled Martin.
"We'll see about that ." said Kaye, narrowing her eyes and falling into a fighting
 stance. Liea did likewise.
"Let the battle begin!" snarled Nartoth, and his eyes blazed with infernal fire as Martin and his gang leapt
 into action.

"Hang on Ryoga, < the kettle boiling .>" said Benji to the little
black pig on the work surface next to her. It nodded, and jumped down
onto the floor as the kettle boiled and Benji picked it up. She
turned round and poured it over the pig, which turned back into
Ryoga, who blushed and hid behind his backpack as Benji blushed and
 turned around, giggling.
"<It's not funny .>" mumbled Ryoga as he got changed into some dry clothes.
 "<Sorry ,>" said Benji, grinning wickedly nonetheless, " <Are you dressed yet?>"
"<Yeah.>"said Ryoga, standing up. He was now wearing a long - sleeved yellow jerkin
and dark blue trousers bound with cord. Benji turned back around and
 wolf - whistled, making Ryoga turn even redder ( "aren't I evil ?" -
 B-Chan "no arguements here !" - K-Chan *WHAP * POW *)
"<Don't forget umbrella this time .>" she said, and Ryoga managed to stop blushing
 and picked up his umbrella.
"<Right... which way do we go?>"
"<Follow me ,>" sighed Benji, going out the back door. Ryoga followed
behind her, "<So, why bad feeling?>"
"<When I saw the last figure, I just... there was something wrong about them .>" frowned Ryoga. He
still wasn't sure what exactly was wrong about that dark figure, but
from the feeling he got when he saw it... it was almost as if it had
been radiating evil. And that meant that Kaye and Liea were
 definitely in trouble.

Kaye and Liea were having a bit of trouble. It wasn't as if they were
fighting badly, in fact they were fighting fast and furious. But
every time one guy went down, another, previously defeated, would
take their place. They were showing unusual tenacity, which Kaye
correctly deduced was due to Nartoth's little deal. She was tiring
and could tell Liea was too. *This is not good... there has to be
something I can do... perhaps...* "Hey Liea!" called Kaye, kicking
a thug out of her way.
"What?" Liea called back, punching one in the stomach.
"Get outta here! I'm gonna try the hiryuu shoten ha!"
"The whatty - what - what?!"
"Just go!" yelled Kaye. Liea shrugged and leapt onto the wall.
"I'll watch from here!" she called.
"Okay!" called Kaye, flicking the peace sign before she
started setting it up. She only had Ryoga's description of how it
worked to go by, but she actually managed quite well, keeping her
body and ki cold and moving in an inward spiral. Ryoga could see it
gathering from the street he and Benji were running up, and told
Benji to hurry, but Kaye executed the final move before they got
there. "Hiryuu shoten ha!!" she yelled, raising her fist and
punching the air. She could feel the hot and cold ki as it swirled
up her arm and all around her, and she saw Martin and his gang being
picked up by the hurricane of ki and swept into the sky. It even
displaced Nartoth. As the ki dispersed, the boys dropped out of the
sky and made small craters where they landed. Benji and Ryoga ran up,
and Liea jumped down off the wall. "I don't see that Nartoth guy..."
 munured Kaye, rubbing her arm.
"I hope he's back in hell where he belongs ." growled Liea.
"What are you talking about?" blinked Benji.
"You guys might as well come round our house, since you're
halfway there already. We might just catch the pizza guy, and I'll
explain once we're there." Said Kaye, surveying the groaning boys who
 were just regaining consciousness.
 "Okay!" said Benji.
"Huh?" said Ryoga. The others groaned, and Benji grabbed his arm and dragged
him after the others. From the gathering darkness of the night sky,
Nartoth watched them with flaming eyes.
