Why can't Konatsu catch a break?
You're forgetting that Kontasu didn't make his appearance until Volume 35,
IIRC. Viz haven't traslated that far, and stands around volume 16. It will be
years before VIZ reaches volume 35 (in fact, it will take Viz around 10 years
to traslate the rest of series, if the company maintains its current pace).
And taking in the fact that Japanese Ranma tankubons are fairly diffuclt to
find, and Internet orders tend to take quite some time to deliver (as of this
time, #35, 37 and 38 still haven't been delivered despite being ordered four
months ago), not everyone is familiar with him.
Heck, I had no idea who he was until I got a copy of volume 36. So it's not
that kontasu is an unpopular character- he simply haven't had enough exposure
to mainstream fans of ranma 1/2, which in turn wasn't familiar with Kontasu
enough to write him in IC in their fanfics.
Is it just that Ukyou is easier to write about as someone stuck to
perpetual misery, rather than a vital Ukyou who rediscovers her heart?
Yah. It's lot easier to write off Ukyo like this than pairing up Ukyo with
Kontasu, since few writers really know about him.
Or do examples of this type of story exist, and I've simply been to
foolish to locate them, though not for lack of trying.
I don't know. I can't remember every fanfic i've read...
Is this a valid and interesting point, or am I just being a fool
(again)?
No, it's a good point. It's just that fans of Ranma are not getting enough
exposure of Kontasu. I'm trying to fix that in my upcoming Ranma fanfic
series.
