I would say BGZone's Bert is FAR more messed up than the REAL Bert.

I think we can all agree that it's important for an original 
character to have some flaws.  In DJ's case, we're introduced to them 
gradually as the story goes along.  But there has to be a balance...
I stopped reading BGZone right around the time Bert's avatar started 
suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, because it seemed to
me like most of what he does is geared solely toward making the other
characters feel sympathy for him.  However, that's just MHO.

Bert (the one in the story) I  think has outgrown a lot of his SI-ness
and simply become another character.....

That should happen inevitably to all SI characters as the plot and 
the character develop.

For a while now, I've been bothered about how SI stories should be 
criticized.  How personal does it get?  Is criticism of an author's
avatar automatically a criticism of the author?  Should avatars be 
judged by the same standards as other characters, or should they be 
treated differently?

Henry Jenkins in "Textural Poachers" covers a good deal on fanfiction 
in
general and other neat things...

I've been meaning to read that book.
